The Super Hornet would probaly be better for Canada anyway. Not sure why they need stealth. It also said they were looking at teh Saab Gripen and Dasault Rafale. Both are excellent air frames. I think the Eurofighter is too expensive for what it brings to the table.

Not too suprised as the cost seemed to go up by 25% everytime they talked about it over the last couple years

Always thought those carrier pilots were NUTS; being able take off and land on a moving carrier deck, that looks like a postage stamp on approach.
Looks like they just made it alot easier!
Neat video!

Yeah it's a big waste IMHO. Back in the 60's they had a jet for all 3 services that could do "Everything" It was the F-4. It never lived up to expectations. Im not sure why in this day and age they just dont do what the Navy did with the Super Hornet and take existing air frames and make them better. It will save in so many areas.

I had a thought. Late sixties into the eighties everybody flew the Phantom. With the cost overruns of the F-35 and -22 programs, and the aging of the current US inventory, why doesn't Air Force adopt the Super Hornet? It's a proven platform and I believe currently in production. In my opinion it's one of the best aircraft ever.

Sidebar: the X-47 UCAV is currently aboard the Truman for sea trials.

Simultaneous thinking /\

I've had the upgrade thought too. They're already rebuilding A-10s. Why not the same with -16s and -15s?

And Canada should def go Super Hornet.

The United States plans to purchase roughly 2,400 of these new aircraft (Lockheed Martin F-35 in A, B, & C variants), at an estimate cost of $200 billion - not counting the nearly $40 billion already spent on development. Of course, the actual cost will likely be double or triple that once purchase begins.

Personally, I don't see much real advantage in combat over the existing Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet introduced in 2010 (similar speeds, payloads, stealth, etc). The Super Hornet is also a heck of a lot cheaper ($66.9 million versus $107~236.8 million depending on variant).

I just dont understand why they didn't make a Super Eagle instead of the F-22, new engine for the AV8B, Super Falcon, build more A-10's. I know the AF is hell bent on stealth, but the 22 and 35 are too expensive to produce in large numbers.

Considering the F-22 can't fly above FL10,000 w/o killing the pilot and we only have about 85, I'd take a proven airframe with highly trained pilot aganist either. I still expect the JSF to be cut down the same way the 22 was.

Is it not true that at least some of the deterrent power of the F-22 is the fact that the crippling cost of building a similar platform is out of the reach of most nations ? ( and frankly the US )

True, but when the jet can't cross the intl time zone w/o fucking up, I don't think China is too concerned. In Vietnam the US had far superior technology in the sky, yet they still were being shot down. Training was the difference maker.

Either way, it shouldn't have happened to a $130mil jet. It's embarrassing. And it wasn't on a test, it was a deployment. So after all the test and evaluations they did, this got by.

J-31? It won't be in operational service for another 7 to 10 years...I can only imagine what advances we will have made in that amount of time. And the only potential buyers right now are India and Pakistan. And it's a Chinese knock-off of stolen US technology...it'll have bugs in it that will never get sorted out.
