Last i heard we cut down on pretty much everybody coming in. It depends on the rate you wanna go though. There are the certain rates that haven't been affected.

We are still taking people but VERY limited numbers. There a rates that have closed down the schools house and won''t be making any more form at least 18 months. The budget is in a bad way and the largest chunk of normal expenses is the people.
It is a great lifestyle, so give it a shot and see what happens!! Best of luck.

The CG does take prior service. I had former marine and navy in my A school class. As the other guys said it is very limited right now and the waiting list for schools have grown significantly. Heres a link to the A school list so you can see current waiting list for whichever rate you may want to go. PM me if you have any questions. http://www.uscg.mil/epm/docs/a-schoollist.pdf

Thanks for the info, just a few more questions until I can actually call and get anhold of a recruiter sometime after christmas. What exactly are you referring to as far as "rate", same thing as rank? or is that referring to what job?

I was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force, and was thinking of trying to do the same in the Coast Guard, we used to regularly have Coast guard C-130's fly through, or on Helicopters.

Yah, the rate is the job. An aircraft mechanic in the CG is the AMT. http://www.uscg.mil/hq/cg1/attc/training/amt.asp
the other aviation rate we have is the AET(electronics) or the AST(Aston Kutcher). But if you really wanna get in try several different recruiters, because some states will take longer than others to get in. as for the school wait, good luck.

The term rate or rating in the Cg means job title. We don't use MOS. Aircraft mechanic or AMT is a great way to go, thats what I do. The waiting list just got really long and the promotions are slower than most rates but for a reason. Its a great job and people tend to stick around.

We have multiple rates that can do that. Depending on the unit, size of boat and what not. Gunners mates(GM), Maritime Enforcement Specialist(ME), Boatswain Mate(BM), are most likely to be the gunners. How ever just about anyone can do the training and man up the mounts.

It would be hard to not do something like that coming from Marine Corps Infantry. It's a thought I've tossed around if my wife ends up somewhere that allows for it.

the GM or ME rate would be fore you then. They play with guns the most. GMs maintain most of the larger caliber weapons as well as the "small arms" (60Cal and below). the MEs are the law enforcement "experts". train others and play GM in some cases. It all depends on where your stationed though. The job can be different at different units.

The Aviation Rates shut the school house down. They aren't making any new ones for 10-24 months at least, last time I had heard...so promotions will be even slower.

Yea I know. I just graduated Nov 15 and the last two mech classes were there. The instructors told us no more classes for fiscal year 13 and nothing planned for 2014.

Polar Roller!!!

You may or may not be able to get in... but the best think you can do is bother the shit out of whatever recruiter you find. Make sure they know that you want in at all cost. You'd be surprised how much of the Coast Guard is prior service. Don't ever give up, even if they tell you no, and call the recruiter at least once a month but more like once a week.

I was on the Polar Sea for my first unit. Still think it was the best unit i've seen so far. Got to see a lot of the world on that boat.

Agreed. Best unit of my 20 years. So much opportunity to see the world it's a shame not everybody gets to do it. Let's see if you're 29 now.. you probably weren't onboard with me. What was your timeframe? and which trips did you make?

I did 2 DeepFreeze Missions and 1 Arctic Summer.
