I tell you what's amazing is that even though the US Army is all-volunteer based, we're still the 6th largest army in the world. That's pretty impressive given that most of the other countries in front of us have a required military service. Pretty impressive.

You know why it's outsourced?? Cause it's more efficient in the majority of cases. People who are GOOD at what they do and ENJOY doing it provide superior services to people are forced to do something.

If we were ever to be over run or back on our heels in a war situation- I should hope that everyone would be interested is defending the country...but in normal times...I've said it already...Too much work and hassle.

it is my belief that mandatory military service goes against the very point of america. this is a country founded on personal freedom and liberty. it is true there are many countries that require their citizens to serve, but none of those countries are america. it is my belief that without freedom we have nothing, being forced to serve takes away your freedom.

no i don't wanna serve next to turds.

- implement a 1% tax on 18-30 year olds not serving or have served 2 years. men AND women alike use. funds to increase pay/benefits, raise enlistment standards standards. attract a better class of people.

now you have a leaner more efficient army filled with professionals. the tax helps defray the defense budget (deficit anyone) yeah taxes suck but with this deficit i see no other way. military spending is the first to get the ax

besides i see this as the capitalist way of doing things.

anyone have anything better or can add to my train of thought?

Manditory Military service has is ups and it downs...

Ups, yes it does shape them and yes it does give them the required skills or motovation the may need to get things done....

Downs...The Military forces today Pride them selves on recruiting the best of the best or so they say... so if you go making it manditory for people to join the quality of the service men goes straight out the window... Remember we are talkin about defending our mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and children here.....

At the latter part of the Vietnam debacle, several men who were about to be drafted moved to Canada. Canada welcomed them, but I don't thing really wanted them due to the conflicts involved since draft dodging was a federal offense. Nixon pardoned the draft dodgers, but they were never really accepted back into the country by both volunteers and draftees alike. I am sure if the government went back to a draft, there would be a lot of dodgers moving out. That may be a good thing, but as was pointed out, would you want someone covering your behind who didn't want to be in the military? The draft was also a way of putting criminals in the military who were given a choice between service and jail. Besides, as was also pointed out, the military would be forced to train those who don't have the intellect for many of the jobs. Many of them might not be so careful where they're pointing the muzzles of the weapons they carry, especially with rival gang members serving in the same unit.

I think that there should be some mandatory government service in some way... whether military, as a nurse, as an admin, whatever. Would put loot in people's pockets....

I entered the Navy at 17, just to get away from a very small town in VT. The draft was still in effect then, but was discontinued before I ever turned 18. I saw many people who didn't want to be there and shouldn't have been there. But later, when I was serving as a legal officer at a major training command, I also saw many of the same types of people. When they enlisted, they thought they were going to fit...but did not....and gave up, turned to other activities to get them out, or just bolted.

I agree with some type of short-termed, Federal or local community service for everyone .........and yes....even college grads! But...I am not in favor of mandatory military service. There are just some people who should not serve in that capacity.

I don't believe that everyone should have to serve. There would be people that don't know their assholes from their elbows and would GET people killed. I believe the people that want to be there will be there. But we have to remember the other people that do others services for our country such as firefighters, police officers, nurses, doctors, teachers, and so on. Granted, some service would help and not hinder all of those careers and people that do them everyday, but i think that's the wonderful thing about America. We all have the CHOICE. And just like many have said before, those that want to be there, will be there. I haven't served, and i think i'll always regret it, but i love what i do and i give my all everyday that i'm there. But i believe that having the choice is what makes this country the greatest.

There should be some sort of compulsary military or service requirement.
This would help to ensure that the children of the wealthy have to do their duty. As it is now, the vast majority of those defending the nation are from the middle class and poor.

It is not as simple as "everyone has to serve" not everyone should have to serve in a military capacity but should serve in some way none the less.

I imagine if this admin tried it it would be "socialist" any other admin, it would be "patriotic"

i think everyone should, but shouldnt be made to-- the military is great and it was the best thing ive ever done, but its not for everyone-- most people are either not cut out for it, or dont have the will to want to do it, and will make the people around them suffer. so the military (air force to be exact ) is a wonderful life decision, but one shouldnt be made to join
