    .
Grasshopper ... the time will go fast and before you know it ... you will be retiring at O-4 to O-5 as my guess.

An older buddy of mine did 26 years in the USA (E-1 to E-7 then O-1 to O-4) and 22 years civil service ... and under the old retirement rules ... he does really well in retirement. He went in at 17 y/o too.

PS ... I know 1 mustanger who even picked up a star before he retired. ... :D

I'm not going to hold my breath!

As long as I can stay in the cockpit, I'll be happy! Riding a desk is no fun!

Want to know something funny? I'm actually in the NC ANG, and I'm in Nav school down here in Pensacola. I was a Loadmaster before AMS, commissioning etc.

    Small world!

O-1E ain't the bottom. At least us Squids look at our O-1E's as a bit more useful than the average Ensign, since they actually knew something.

Do the Navy O-1's and O-1E's wear different looking rank or is it just obvious when an O-1 has more than a ribbon or two? I've noticed Navy officers wear their ribbons. Its an unsaid rule that Air Force O's don't wear ribbons, so besides my enlisted aircrew wings (you'd think that be a given, but its not), I look like another 2Lt. Doesn't help that I look 10 years younger than I really am too! :)

Glad the Navy draws on their CGO's prior experience. Any Marine Corps or Army folks have any input? It seems the Army is very good about promoting the younger ranks to WO's or O's once they can check the education requirement box off.

An O-1 is an O-1 in uniform minus the ribbons and warfare devices. A lot will have silver warfare devices for enlisted then will have to qualify for gold. However the CO and XO know that there is more experience with the O-1E than the regular Ensign.

As will the men. While I did know a few good officers who had come out of ROTC or the Academy the best by far had been former enlisted men. It helps a lot to have walked a few miles in their shoes if you are going to lead men.

    Thanks!

Those of you that have the opportunity to, take advantage of that Post 9/11 GI Bill! Uncle Sam paid for both my Undergrad and Masters on the regular and then Post 9/11. If you aren't using the education benefits that are there, you are cheating yourself.

As a young airman, I always thought the mustang officers were much more approachable for this reason.

I've also met some really good officers with no enlisted experience too. And I've met some prior E's that unfortunately forgot where they came from.

The GI Bill is changing every year and its been a few years since I finished my masters, so things may have changed (for the better, I'm sure). When I was using mine, the regular GI Bill was good for 36 months (9 months x 4 years of college). With the Post 9/11, it added an additional 12 months on top of it. Half way through grad school, it ran out and I was on my own after the additional 12 months was up.

Obviously cross check with how it worked for me with your base education office or http://www.gibill.va.gov/ with how it all works now. Talking with some guys that are still in college, it sounds like things have just gotten better.

I should add, because I know there are probably civilians reading the military section that may be interested in military service, you are currently an officer, or you have some college done before you joined, etc, that you still get the 36+12 months regardless of rank (enlisted/commissioned). Example: You joined the military after your sophomore year of college and have 2 years knocked out. You should have no problem finishing your degree, and even your masters if you'd like, with plenty of GI Bill left. Some even have enough to start a doctoral program. If you go to college and graduate, and then commission, you have all your GI Bill to use for another bachelors degree, masters degree, certificate, etc.

Finally, if you want to end up in a cockpit (pilot of navigator) in the Air Force, I would highly encourage you to at least get SOME flight time, if not your private pilot license (PPL). You can use your GI Bill to cover the cost, or most of, your flight training. I WISH I had known about this while I was in college instead of paying out of pocket.

More info on flight training can be found at http://www.gibill.va.gov/resources/education_resources/programs/flight_training.html

    Good luck!
