Marine job choosing time.

Do I choose my job after signing the contract or before? My recruiter says everyone goes in "open contract" and choose their jobs before shipping out to boot camp.

 

You can go in open contract but personally i wouldnt.... if it were me i wouldnt sign my contract until i knew what field i was going into.... either way tho they cannot garantee you an exact job.... just a certain field.... something along those lines..... it was close to six years ago when i signed up so i dont really remb the process that well

I didn't sign the contract until I was guaranteed the MOS field that I wanted (0300 infantry) Later on (in SOI) I found out exactly which job I would be getting within that field (0311 infantry rifleman) That was in 1998, but it's still basically the same now. I have a friend who just left for boot camp a couple weeks ago. The recruiter kept telling him to sign without a job guarantee (open contract). He told him that they would be able to get him into the job he wanted after he signed. But my friend said that he wouldn't sign until he was guaranteed the job he wanted. He had to wait a few months but he finally got it.

If you sign open contract, you're basically letting them put you in whatever MOS field they feel like. If you know what MOS you want, you should wait until they have a quota for it. You might have to wait a while though.

 

I wouldn't sign a darn thing until the contract says what you want it to say. If you want a certain job then make them work for you. That is what the recruiter is there for. Ask questions and do your research.

I wanted to go active duty for 4 years as an 0311 (infantry rifleman) but that didn't happen. My honest, high integrity recruiter told me active duty slots were filled so he signed me into the reserves. He said in the reserves, I can switch to active duty; which is true.

Since I was voluntold to be in the reserves, I was guaranteed a mos (0311). Good thing about the reserves is, you're guaranteed an mos and when you report to mos school, you're given priority to start training first; unlike the active duty contract people who stay in "receiving" until there are open slots at the school.

Been in for 3 years now and have thought about switching to active many, many times but a family issue prevents me from doing so...

If you go in as open contract, the Marine Corps. will stick you to the mos where they need people. You could get lucky and get a very good job or get very unlucky and be stuck with a shitty ass job.

A few Marines were open contract in my platoon from boot camp. One got a job as Security Forces, another one got it in Crash Fire Rescue, and the other one, got a job as a packaging specialist. lol...

do not, i repeat do not go open contract. recruiters are all asses... its all about quota my friend. take your asvab, get your score so you know your options. pick out you mos and make sure it is on your contract BEFORE you sign it.

Ok. Thanks guys. I got a 61 on my asvab. They told me it was pretty good but idk. What should I ask my recruiter or tell him? Is there like a magic phrase that will make him be honest with me?

 

Yup.....say this, I don't sign shit until I get what I want for a MOS. and if they still give you a hard time, tell him you are going to the Air Force recruiter.

no it doesnt matter, as long as you didnt sign anything... you're fine.

 

if you have an asvab score its good anywhere.

what field do you want? if you go infantry it will almost always be open contract unless you are going reservist. thats just the way it is. the marine corps is big on placing you to fit thier needs and in the infantry that is found out in ITB at SOI halfway through the 8week course. there is hope though. if you got time to wait then you tell the recruiter what job you want (with some good research) and then you say when you find an opening for it give me a call, until then i'll talk with the other branches and see what they can do for me! and that is that. there will be a month when he is low in the numbers and needs a for sure "sell" and he will be calling you up.

65 asvab isnt awful but what was your GT score because that is the thing that will give you the most options.

Keep us posted on your communications with the recruiter..they will feed you all sorts of crap!

 

The four scores were mm106 gt107 el102 and cl107

 

anything over a 100 GT pretty much helps you out. some things are a 110 limit but with a 100 you should be good. tell him to give you a list of all the jobs you qualify for and then research them! think about what will help you should you decide to get out unless your gung ho and all you want to do is go infantry.
