Going to Guam isn't really a deployment....is it? Sounds like a vacation.

I was supposed to be there for two years but I only got to spend nine months there because I got promoted to MSG and had to PCS. I really loved it there and I guess I could have turned down the promotion but screw that. :)

I did get to go through Super Typhoon Pongsona. I didn't even know Super was a classification but that's what they called it. Luckily I lived on Andersen so I was without electricity, phone, and gas for only two weeks.

I'll tell you how much support I got from the Air Force. There was no gas to be bought on the whole island. I had a generator but no gas to put in it. I was lucky to just have a little in my car so I was riding my bike to the Army Reserve Center 12 miles off base.

I then heard that the Air Force was giving everyone a ration card to buy five gallons of gas from the gas station on base. You were supposed to get it from your Command but mine was in Hawaii. I went to Family Support and explained to them the deal and I was told that even though I lived in on base housing I was not entitled to five gallons because I worked off base. I told them that I was riding a bicycle 12 miles off base and if I worked here I wouldn't need their damn gas.

I ended up going to an Army COL who also was on base and he hooked me up. As it was you still had to wait in line for hours to have a 1LT pump exactly five gallons - no more no less.

    It's coming...

That's what my wife always said but I liked Guam much better then Hawaii. Hawaii is too fast paced, too many tourists, and it just like being on the main land.

Guam was laid back, the people much nicer, and every weekend there was a fiesta in some village. Those fiestas were the best with plenty of Budweiser, tuba, kelaguin, red rice, finadeni, and if you were very lucky and knew the right person a coconut crab or two.

I agree that being away from home sucks no matter where you go but I'd go back again in a heart beat.
