    Shit, ain't that the truth.

But yeah, I've made preparations. No where near the distance some of you have, but enough water for probably 5 days, enough food for a week - not counting food in the pantry already.

As for "best" foods, that depends. MRE's have approx 1500 calories per meal. Problem is, 12 meals are bulky, usually about $5 per meal and weigh 30 lbs. So the weight/calorie is kind of bad. The 5 year shelf like is a guideline - I've eaten original MRE's (in the dark brown pack) that were pushing 15-20 years and most were edible. Some were pretty rank though.

Dehydrated ("backpacking") food is light, better weight/calorie, but pricey and require water. Finally, if you go blow your money on fancy long-term food, you may realize that you hate the taste of it if the SHTF. Best bet is to stock what you already have/like and rotate it in. Ie, most canned commercial food in supermarkets has a 1-2 year shelf life anyway. pasta and rice can last years (so can most dried fruits or grains, if kept dry and out of heat and light).

Personally I have 1 case of MRE's, some dehydrated food (I actually camp...) and whatever is in the pantry. I figure that gives me some variety. If need be, I can learn to hunt with my .22.

EMP is a probably over-rated event.

Assuming the item is off during the EMP event, it should work fine upon turning on. EMP only affects powered-up electronics.

    ElectroMagnetic Pulse.

It's a byproduct of a nuclear detonation. If a nuke was exploded in the upper atmosphere, it could send an EMP over most of the nation, thus screwing our technology heavy society and throwing us into the 1800's.

I picked up two 7 gallon water containers from walmart yesterday. rinsed them out and cleaned with bleach, rinsed again, and filled. I have those for emergency's and I have a good stock of about 7 cases of bottled water that we rotate out for day to day drinking.

Check out your local CVS, they have 24 pack waters right now for $2.22
I picked up a gallon of milk for 2.99, got $1 back in reward bucks for my next purchase. so I rang up the water separate and used the reward buck and got that case of water for $1.22 :D
