Money is no real issue, but I am looking for a reliable bike. Would anyone be able to chime in on their experiences?

    correction: Suzuki is a 1000

Can't answer that without knowing how you intend to use the bike. Touring, daily commuter, long distance runs, throwing it at mountain curves..?

I can't figure out your needs from the two incredibly different bikes you listed

That may be true with older models. The newer models 07+ have service intervals the same if not longer than other brands. The vstrom has been pretty much unchanged for the last 6 years, it's pretty rocksolid

Are you set on these 2 bikes? What about the BMW F800Gs, a friend of mine has one and it's a fantastic machine., or the KTM 990 Adventure.

Check out stromtrooper.com to get all the info you could ever want on a strom, 1000 or 650. I have a 650 myself and have found it quite entertaining to ride. Plenty of power and stone reliable. If you are set on a 1000, from what I've heard they will do 100,000 miles with no problems. Just routine maintenance. I don't have any insight on Ducatis' but they sound like they are a little more complicated when it comes to maint. Sit on each bike you are thinking about, one of them will call out your name and make you take it home with you.

Yes, pay three times the value for a bike like all the others, then thousands more to individualize it in the same way as the rest of the herd. Put loud pipes on it so you can piss off the voting masses and get them to legislate restrictions to our sport. Oh, and participate in Pirate Parties with hundreds of your buddies riding 20mph below the speed limit with traffic backed up behind you for miles. Don't forget to stop at every bar.

Most brands let their engineers design the bikes. Harley lets marketing design them.

He said he wanted a reliable bike...:D

How about the BMW GS series bikes or are you set on those 2? Ducati will kill you with maintenance costs.

sadly, I've only put Husky Liners in it thus far - tend to blow all my cash on my bikes and guitars.
Harley's and Duc's are expensive to repair/maintain.......Yam's, kaw's, honda's, and suzuki's parts are much more abundant and less expensive........don't limit yourself though.
consider what you want a bike to do for YOU, and then shop for the best suited machine of your liking

My dad has an old '99 ZRX 1100 which is pretty awesome. Too bad they don't make them any more.
