Sorry if this is in the wrong area. I am thinking of buying a 2007 Yamaha XT 225 motorcycle. I just want it for putting around with my kid which has a XR 100r. Not looking for a big bike.

The bike has 5500 miles and they are asking 2000.00. But i got them to $1700. When i checked the bike out it has new tires and a new battery. The bike really is in new condition with all manuals tools etc that came with it from factory.

The only thing that felt weird was where the clutch was grabbing, its not slipping, but I think it just may need an adjustment, is $1700 a good price? KBB has it at 2400 retail, but this is a private owner.

Is 5500 miles a lot for this bike? I have to let them know by tomorrow.

    Thanks

2nd gen is where all forums go...

But it seems like a good deal to me. I'd go for it.

If you think its worth $1700 then go for it. The important thing is that you'll have something to spend time with your kid. Those moments you can't put a price on.

To me, 5500 miles isn't that much on a bike. I've got one bike that has 24,000. Ultimately its what you decide its worth. As far as the clutch, every bike is different. My Ducati certainly doesn't feel the same as my Suzuki.

^^^They are pretty cheap too...the miles dont seem like a lot but its also how it was ridden for those 5500 miles, just something to think about it. I would probably go for it if everything looked good. My .02

Bike was ridden 100 % on street. Matter of fact he took the knobbies off and put street tires on, i would have to change them out to put back on trail. No bid deal.

Heck of a deal! Clutch may just need a little use to get the haze off the plates.

Sounds like a great deal! Those XT's are damn near bullet proof. If it was a road bike with only 5,500 miles on it, I doubt he cooked the clutch, and if he did, it would be much more apparent when you test drove it. Either way, like people have said, replacement isn't that big of a deal on a bike that size.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I own a 83 XT250, the XT's have been around a long time and have proven to be a dependable bike. I like others would not worry about the clutch, most likely just needs an adjustment and if it were bad, not that big of a deal to fix. If the seller changed the bike to street tires I would check to see if he changed either the front or rear sprocket to gain some top end speed. I really like the way my XT is geared, I ride alot with my daughter and with the stock gearing the bike will putt around nicely.

Let us know if you get it.

XT225s are bulletproof if you use them as intended. A customer of mine had an XT225 that used as a daily commuter. He replaced the rear sprocket so he could run it at freeway speeds. Something like 60 miles roundtrip each each day. Needless to say, the crankshaft/pistons scattered and took out everything including the cases. One of the worst I've seen in my 9 years of working on bikes! Anyways, when bikes haven't been ridden in a while, the oil on the clutch plates gets really sticky and kinda holds them together creating a "grabby" or "sticky" clutch. Usually, a good, hard ride will take care of it but sometimes you have to pull the clutch plates and give them a good cleaning and reassemble with fresh oil.

XT225 is not for highway. top speed on XT is about 65-70, you cant cruise at that speed on XT. valves will not take it. i have KLX400, and i stay away from highway much as possible.

Wasn't the valves. Connecting rod seized then came apart and took out just about everything else. I got the engine back together and he traded her in.

Street Tires, They are bran new too. I am replacing with some dual sport tires. The previous owner only used as a commuter when gas prices sky rocketed.

Yeah I know, my intent was for banging around the yard with my 11 yr old kid and through some trails by our house, he has a xr 100, so I should have no problem keeping up with him.

I am going to put a plate on, just to be able to cruise some of the side streets by our house.

sadly, I've only put Husky Liners in it thus far - tend to blow all my cash on my bikes and guitars.
check your clutch cable for wear or adjustment if the clutch is acting up -- cheapest attempt to remedy the problem at around $20.......that's where I would start anyway. Nice ride for the money though!!
