Fork Seals... DIY??

Anyone in here ever change fork seals themselves? When I was younger I always paid the dealership to do it, but they charge quite a bit to do it. I found this video on youtube and I'm thinking of buying the tools and doing it myself... for those that have done it, is it a lot harder than this video makes it look?? Have any suggestions for me??

My dad and I stumbled our way through it once, both first timers. It was an older dirt bike though so I'm not sure what would be different with your set-up. The right tools will make all the difference! It wasn't an overly easy process and there were a lot of 4-letter words uttered throughout, but I'd do it myself again if needed.

 

I just had a buddies mechanic fix my right side one when I bought my bike.

they are pretty straight forward, just make sure you don't scratch the shafts. Also check for burrs in them. Get the tool to press in the seals. Takes about an hour the first time around. Good hint, put saran wrap around the shaft to slide the seal on instead of that condom looking thing.

 

I do mine all the time. I use the wrapper from the seal and place it over the end of the fork stanchion. Grease the inner "dish" of the seal and slide it over the wrapper. Pound them in with a seal driver and put them back together. The most time consuming part of it was getting all the oil out. I can do both seals in about 20 minutes with the forks already off the bike. Make sure you clean the inner part of the outer fork stanchion, where the seal will sit.
