thought this was funny........made in India.....wow!
so much for keeping jobs here in the US...way to go HD.

Milwaukee-based Iconinc bike maker Harley-Davidson on Tuesday said it will start an assembly facility of its motorcycles in India by the first half of 2011, making it the second facility outside the US.
The company will set up the new facility near Bawal in Haryana and expects the assembly facility to be operational in the first half of 2011, it said in a statement. However, the bike maker did not divulge any details on the production capacity or the investment that will be made in the facility.

They should have kept the work here....

 

Yep, North American buyers will still get models made here in the states. If anything, it helps an American company grow stronger through exports. Our manufacturers have a difficult time keeping up in a global economy because of our labor costs. Some are warranted, some are not. Without getting into a conversation about the crooks at the UAW, it is nice to see a domestic manufacturer find a way to thrive!

 

Yeah...I know the article sort of struck me funny since most HD owners/riders pride the made in USA mantra.

Its a global market place for sure.

 

Some of them are made in York, PA. In fact, that plant was in threat of being closed and all productin to be made in Kentucky. I haven't followed it, but I think they found a way to keep the york plant open.

Fortunately for them (being in Inida) - it'll make it easier and more affordable for people overseas to buy their bikes = more sales, more profit.

The problem would be - if they ever decide to take ALL their production to India. And - since they're an AMERICAN icon, I'd hope someone in their corporate ladder would refuse to go that route.

Once the stockholders see how much the cost difference is between a US built bike versus an overseas built bike using dirt cheap labor you can kiss the jobs here goodbye and all production will move overseas just like so many other companies manufacturing facilities have.

 

The front shocks have been made in China for over 10 years, the last couple of years the transmission gears are made in China. I used to do allot of work for a company that made the tranny gears and they lost it.

At a recent local county fair, I photoed a manufacturer's ID plate on a big John Deere tractor and it was made in India.

china actually owned harley at one point. i believe in the early 50s. not many people know that. i myself, wouldnt own a vibrating overpriced underpowered tank. sorry guys, but all my machines are of foreign design. just my opinion

 

Not a fan of yesterday's technology at tomorrow's prices myself.

 

The bikes will actually be more expensive than the US models and will be assembled in India. The bike will be built in the US.

The first model, SuperLow, will be priced at 550,000 rupees ($12,168) while the second, called Iron 883, will be available for 650,000 rupees, the company said. Both models will be assembled at its factory in the northern state of Haryana and will be open for bookings from Jan. 1, it added.

The India factory will assemble motorcycles from kits comprising parts produced by the company's factories in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Missouri, as well as its component suppliers. Harley currently imports fully-built units, which cost more due to higher taxes than importing knocked-down kits.

Looks like good math to me! I just wish I had the extra cash to invest in HD right now.

 

The word 'assembly' is different than the word 'made'. From what I've read - they will only be assembled there - but that the parts will be made in other places.

What's crazy about this is how anti-import HD riders can be about imported bikes and now HD is gonna be made assembled or whatever in India. I don't think there's much room to be all snooty about other bikes any more. I'd rather have a lot of bikes than one from India. Suck move by HD IMO. Hoping sales suffers enough to bring it all back home.
