    Hmmmm.

It is a good thing I asked here and not only in bike sites, since those seem to be more biased toward their specific bikes, though that its logical.

Well, I do want an R6, but I do have to take into consideration what you are all saying. I started my post saying I did not know much about bikes, and I am glad I did, as you guys opened my mind in what has to do with the type of engine on the bike.

Taking all of this into consideration, I am thinking of talking with my instructor about the Ninja 650. I do like that you have all said that it will be a bit more forgiving. Also like the flatter powerband which will come in handy as I am a beginner in this and would not want sudden spikes which could make me crash. I am not very nervous at all about riding the bikes themselves though, I am more worried about the horrible drivers around here... It is actually what has made me not get a bike in such a long time since I have wanted one.

Thanks again for all the comments so far!

I'm in full agreement with this guy. If you must get a 600 get a Ninja 600, or an SV. The 250R's are awesome bikes. I've ridden dirt for about 7-8 years so I have enough self confidence not to kill myself on a 600 as a first bike but when I get the means to buy one I want a 250R to start out with. I think you should get a Ninja 250R and ride it until you feel so comfortable on it that you have no problem winding the motor up and tearing around corners with your hair on fire and then move up to a bigger displacement bike. Have you looked at the older Ninja 500's?

You wanna talk about sitting on a rocket?! I rode one of my friends around a parking lot once and them things pull like a damned tractor. I never left 2nd gear and returned it to the owner as quickly as I could.

The problem is finding them. I was looking for Ninja's earlier today and all I found were either 250s or above 750. It seems like it will be hard to find a 650. Only saw one or two in the classified everyone uses here and saw no 500s.

I have actually been looking for months for what I want, and while I was not looking for a Ninja before, I still saw what was available, there were not many.

I have no problems watching him ride away into the sunset on that bike. I'm not sure what exhaust he has but I think that it's a Yoshi slip on's. Either way it sounds amazing. Mine always get stained in the front.

My suggestion is that if your opting out of the 250 why go up to the 650's like the ninja or a sv. the 600 class are basically street legal race bikes...older 650's would be perfect for a first bike for someone who doesn't want to start on a 250.

Also if you get the bike of you dreams as your first bike, you will probably also drop the bike of your dreams... just my .02$

Edit: didnt see your post above, my bad. you could always wait for something to pop up...or just hope on a 250 and then get a r6 when the time comes

Yes, this is why I think I am leaning against buying the R6, like everyone has suggested.

The SV650 is a far cry from a street legal race bike, that's why they're being recommended for a beginner who wants a 600. The SV has a small front tire so it's very nimble, a smooth powerband, a softer suspension and a less aggressive riding position than say an R6. An SV650 and an R6 are not comparable motorcycles in my opinion.

FWIW, I used to have an older 600cc race bike and even though it was 20 years old, it would still haul ass. An older bike will be more timid than it's newer replacement but may still be a handful.

ok after reading several posts on here i started to loose my mind.lol anyway if you have some experience on a motorcycle either dirt or street that is a good start. as for advice get a smaller version of the bike you want.... for example if you want a sport bike get a 600(the ninja 250 is a bout the slowest thing on wheels) honda does now make a cbr250rr. as long as you have clutch and throttle control and SELF CONTROL you should be able to do ok on a 600 as a first bike. also as for makes its all personal preferance. A begininner isnt going to be able to push a bike to limits of a lap time difference of 1/10 of a second. oh and to the comment about no good entry level bikes... honda cbr6oorr has been bike of the year in multiple years in your range. i have ridden everything from a ninja 250 to a mv agusta 312 f4r(fastest production 1000cc bike oh and i could have mixed up those numbers on the mv agusta it was my roomates... i cant affoard a 28k motorcycle)

oh and not sure about the r6 but a lot of sport bikes went fuel injected around 06.. so you wont have to worry about carb sinking. just another plus.

All I was saying with the no entry level hondas was that the CBR600RR is not a beginner bike IMO and the CBR250RR is a bit small IMO.

This is why so many motorcyclists end up as blood stains on pavement. they MUST have a super powered sport bike as their first bike.

Go buy a beater ninja 250 or gs500 or something and and learn to ride before you get on something that with the twist of a throttle will turn you into a hood ornament.

my first motorcycle was a 2006 honda cbr600rr. It was a great first bike. When i first started i didnt go pretending i was Valentino Rossi.. i started slow road in some neighborhoods then started on side streets before i hit the highways(which in san diego are not safe for anyone) but after a couple thousand miles i started to go faster, go ride the canyons and started using more of the bike... after a couple years i traded it for a left over brand new 2008 cbr1000rr and that thing was crazy. but if you ride smart a 600 will be fine.... its when you get over confident that will get you hurt.... and remember there are two types of riders those that have been down and those that are going to go done!

    check this out

been look at it, and just like ericb put it would be perfect as a beater bike, id hate to drop anything in the first place, but if its going to happen might as well be on something older. if it was closer id hope on this my self.

that wasnt because you were new to riding tho  thats god way making you meet the pavement :D.

my friend had that happen on a brand new gsxr and he has been riding for years. get got the traffics tape of it and when his bike slid into the curb it basically went into 1000 peices and it wasnt totaled . that was fun lifting into the truck
