I've been riding street bikes for about 10 years now. My second bike, which I just got rid of (got hit on the freeway) was a 2003 SV650S - the first year with fuel injection. It's got a lot of low end, but it's not as fast as it's competitors. I never got bored with it and it ran great with minimum required maintenance. They are ususally a bit cheaper than it's competitors which is a plus.

Standards

If you don't have your heart set on a fully faired sport bike, there are many great middle class standards that will give you everything you need. Comfortable ergos, plenty of power, and good passenger accomdations. It won't wont hurt to take a look. For your Jap tastes the FZ6 was mention, the FZ8 is awesome all rounder (I used to own an FZ1), the SV's someone has thrown out there. On the Euro trash side, Triumph has put out a version of the 675 Daytona in a standard, the 675 Street Triple, KTM has the 690 Duke, and Ducati has the Monster 696, and Street Fighter 848.

I do regret that I didnt start on something cheaper and smaller because if I had, I wouldnt have had to spend so much money repairing my bike,. All comes down to the rider.

^This.. I started with a Ninja 250, awesome bikes.. Sure you can't power wheelie it and shit, but you get 71miles to the gallon! You can drag knee in it, it looks fucking sweet now and best part, 4k new out the door. Ran that bike for about a year, ended up giving it to my wife to learn and bought a 900RR Honda.

600cc sport bikes are no joke. Everyone thinks you need a 1000cc, you don't. And for daily drivers, 1000's suck. To much power for traffic.

If you value your life and your guest riders, get a small sport bike, give it a year or so, work your way up. Other than that the best/safest way to learn is on the track. But that gets expensive fast.

One of the best riders in our neck of the woods rode the piss out of his Ninja 250. Couldn't keep up in the long straights but look out in the twisties. I'd venture he rode that bike more than others he owned and he was smooth as silk. Beautiful to watch him ride it.

Idk if anyone has recommended a 650 in stead of a 600. 600's are more like street legal race bikes. 650's have a better powerband that will be better for a beginner

Check out the sv 650's if a 250 is to small for you. They are a lot better for a beginner to start on if they want to be in the 6xx's

I'll give you that one. I started out with an R6, loved it..but...also dumped it. matured over the years and no i ride an 09 R1..love the thing. never driven a better bike. BUTTTT when you're stuck in traffic....the idle speed in first gear is like 12 mph...so you learn how to use the clutch QUICK if you dont already know how..

i ride 2-up with my girl all the time..I'm 6'5" 230# and shes 5'3" 110#..works real well..she actually sits on my seat with me sometimes..the seats HUGE on the R1.. but when you do start riding 2-up..just tell her to keep her feet on the pegs in the turns..and look where your going..not in front of you...you dont want to know how i know to keep her feet on the pegs wasnt the one to do it..but saw it..not good..

Lol! I had a TL1000 and was doing TONS of daily driving in heavy traffic.. Ditched it because of the same reason with the clutch.. Just too much. My 900RR is amazing, the clutch is like butter but still grips like crazy. 38k miles on my 1998, still runs like a beast!

Guy i work with rides that bike. She sounds amazing..he's got a jardine exhaust on her.

My R1 has the two brothers pipes on her..everyone i ride with, even the ones in front of me, tell me then can hear every change in my throttle she sound soooo deep

I'll just throw this out there, have you considered a more standard type bike like the suzuki v-stom 650 or the kawasaki versys? Both are going to be just as fast as an entry level 600 sportbike but be more comfortable for two up riding and commuting.

As for the comment about the 2 kinds of riders, I really can't and don't agree with that. I'm on a motorcycle only forum and I'd say at least half our members are older guys who've been riding for decades and most of them have never crashed. IMO those many (most?) of those who crash do so because they tried to ride faster than their ability, or they just didn't know their own riding skill to begin with.

Now on a more serious note, I first stated riding on a ninja 250 but then got the itch for more power. If you've never ridden before, i recommend starting on something small. But other then that, 600 should be fine for you and a passenger!

Yamaha FZ6R if you are looking for full fairings or FZ8 for a more naked look. both have a more relaxed riding position for a taller rider like yourself.

Hmmm...sounds familiar..lol..I toned it down a little with the DB killers for the Two Brothers pipes...love the bike.





I have a buddy that has a Ninja 650..great bike..he has had it for a few years and it runs great. If you're new to bikes I would suggest against a CBR,GSX-R,R class Yamaha,Ducati 1198/1199. Pretty much anything supersport or superbike oriented. They're awesome bikes,but not very forgiving. And the seating position makes it harder to ride slowly ( think maneuvering in parking lots). Not only that but the seat is pretty hard on the ass for longer trips,and the passenger seat is even worse. If you want to take the girl with you places and plan on maybe doing overnight or weekend rides eventually I would look elsewhere. Something with a more upright seating position will help your skills and confidence greatly.

As far as getting a 250,the mileage and the price will be tempting,but you'll outgrow it before one season is out. They're great if you just want a cheap commuter,but if you plan on riding for leisure, I would go at least a 650. Find something you like the look of and feel good on ( you said the 600cc sportbikes are small..I felt the same when shopping for my R1. They're narrower and the seating position is more aggressive. I love the way my R1 feels..fits me well..but I wouldn't suggest it for a beginner.

Above all else..no matter what you buy..respect it. Keep learning. Keep growing as a rider. The day you think you know it all will be the start of the countdown until you get hurt. Keep in mind people WILL NOT watch for you. They WILL NOT see you.

I agree with this quote because I have been an endorsed rider for several decades and have never been down, but then I was a hyper-vigilant rider too. The best advice I remember is to never be intimadated into riding beyond your abilities. I'd rather be teased for being the last one to show up than be the first at my own funeral.

I really liked my Suzuki Intruder 800 cruiser; it seemed to have more than enough power for 2 up. Those pictures are beautiful, but you can pick up a good used one for a lot less. Good luck in your search and subsequent riding.

2011 Suzuki gsx 750r. They are small, quick an agile but they have a programmer that let's you switch between 600 cc or 750cc so you get comfortable at your own pace. Plus they are just amazing bikes

There are a few exceptions to that comment. If you ride smart and pay attention you'll be fine.
