Quoting myself for that very reason. 2strokes are great woods bikes, and chainsaw engines. Throw a tag on it, and it's nice to connect trails. For a true dual sport though like the OP needs, with mostly street commuting, a 2stroke isn't the best bike.

I wouldn't use one for commuting. If he's on a lot of highway but still wants something for trails I'd go with a DRZ.

Yeah the bike will mainly be used for a 50 round trip commute to work up a mountain. So 4 stroke > 2 stroke in my case.

I would tend to disagree with you on the woods bike part, depending on the type of trails you ride. For tighter trails, I would definitely prefer the 4 stroke because of the higher torque across the RPM range vs. the narrower power band of the 2 stroke. I like 2 strokes for tracks or more well defined trails. I suppose it comes down to personal preference so this is just my $0.02.

I'm not knockin 4strokes. I think they're a great setup. I'd own a 2 stroke over a 4 stroke any day. What are the enduro racers on? 2 strokes. Mike lafferty told us he wasn't a huge fan of the 4 stroke. He went back to a 2 and had way better finishes. Not saying ones better than the other, but I'd go with what the pros are doin

That's racing and a professional rider. He knows how to ride much better than the average dual sport owner and can keep the bike it's power band. Someone like me can find themselves in a situation and end up lugging the 2 stroke too much and make the engine bog instead of having that low end torque when you really need it to save you. There's a HUGE difference between a professional rider and an average joe. That being said, if I could ride at his level, I might share his opinion.

I have had it at about 110 down hill, its geared for 95 - 100, then again its a supermoto. Not a good bike of your going to be commuting via highway, just a canyon toy for me. Its fun to beat the R1's in the canyons though, especially with a motor half the size as theirs

I've considered a supermoto. I miss my GSXR. I know I won't buy another sport bike. Maybe a sport touring

What GSXR did you have? Yeah the sport touring bikes are kinda the best of both worlds, good choice.

'04 600. Yellow and black. First road bike I ever owned. Did a couple track days on it. Cartwheeled it once. Fixed it and rode it for another 2 years and sold it to buy a trials bike.

I haven't checked out any of the newer sport tourers. A friend has an ST1100 and loves it. Wicked fast old guy on a bike that doesn't look like it should be going that fast
