Well I got my first bike when I was 14 and it was just a written test and BAM! I had a license. It has been on my license ever since.

WV were I am at requires a written and for you to pass an maneuverability test.
MD they require you class a motorcycle class to get your endorsement.

I would recommend not being like the rest of the first time "stuntas" out there and at minimum take a MSF course if this is your first road bike. I figure you have some common sense since did not run out and buy or trade for a Gixxer 1000 and shit load of ICON gear for your first bike. My .02

Nothing against ICON, it is pretty. Before people think I'm bashing it, stuntas and ICON just go together. And before someone says I hate stuntas, its only if they rocket down a crowded freeway on one wheel, either front or back. There are places to show off that skill.
    Wheww I hope I covered my bases.

Dairyland, cheapest insurance I could find. And they cover well when you have an accident.

You need at least liability coverage.

Well it is the law to have at least liability ins here. Not a joke if you get a ticket. They are expensive!

No road test in the state of AL. To ride it to my job on an army depot I have to take their road class, but that is it.

Whatever you do, make you have good coverage on yourself over the bike. If you happen to get in an accident and get a little messed up, be damn sure you have the ins. to cover your medical bills. I'm not syaing you're gonna wreck, but better safe than sorry. I see tons of people saying their premium is $75/year or whatever low rate they have, but if something happens they are screwed. The actual comprehensive on my bikes is like $200 out of $850/year. That is for all three of my bikes. Don't cheap out when it comes to your well being. I guess I'm starting to sound like an old man, who'd have thought 36 was old!! Take the MSF safety course, it should bring your rates down a tad and will give you a ton of good advice on how to stay safe on hte road.

^^ Your medical insurance will cover your own injuries. Comprehensive covers your bike's damages, and liability covers what you do to the other guy. You can have cheap motorcycle insurance (by getting liability only) and still have good coverage for your own injuries.

    I used Merkel American (http://markelinsuresfun.com/MotorcycleInsurance)
    also known as bikeline.
I pay $350/yr with good coverage and free towing/road side assistance for an extra $25/yr and u are getting a flat bed tow. AAA does not cover motorcycles. Never had an issue with customer service when I was in an accident. not my fault but they were very helpful
