    Looking to buy a Tacoma
I'm completely new to Toyota Tacomas and I need some advice from some of you "Taco" experts out there... which one should I buy? There's so many choices! I need something that will handle a lot of different offroad terrain but will also get down the interstates/highways ok as well. I'm thinking I want a lot of engine power/torque so maybe the V6 3.4L or 4.0L with the turbocharger option (for getting out of nasty places), 6 speed manual transmission (for highway use), access cab (big enough), very possibly lifted with some aftermarket suspension work (with tall skinny tires for good clearance and all the rock here in the southwest?), looks are completely unimportant. My primary intended use will be for offroad exploration, camping, hiking, etc. Some suggestions thus far have been either a 2004 or a 2009 pre-runner with the full TRD off-road package - what do you all think? What should I buy? What would YOU buy given what you know now? Treats for anyone willing to help! Phill )

Depending on your use wanted. The 1st gens which were 96-04 were basically the strongest tacomas made for offroading use. However they are alittle smaller, there your choice for offroading use. 2nd gens 05-11 are bigger more roomy still do very well off road just have alot more things that can break. then the 12 is just a 2nd gen with a new front end and interior

Why settle for 2wd when you can have a 4x4?

Thanks for all the info so far... it's helpful. Seems I should maybe start looking at a 2004 then instead of a 2009 for mainly offroad use? If I stuck with 2nd gen, what year is best?
