New here, looking to buy a Tacoma...

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here to this forum and I have never owned a Toyota so I'm sure I will have lots of questions. Anywho, I am looking to trade in my current Ford for a smaller truck that get better gas mileage. I have a certain Tacoma in mind, it's a 2005 and has 100,000 miles on it. Do you guys think this is too much? I need a reliable truck that gets better gas mileage than the one I have.

It will most likely get better gas mileage. And buying a Toyota with 100k is fine. I bought mine with just over 100k. They run forever. Some guys are over 300k

Buying used is always tricky but I have a 2007 with about 43000 miles on it and I have not had one problem with it yet. But get a mechanic to check it out first. Good luck.

Depends, I had an 03 F150 extended cab with the 4.6L V8 and got about the same mileage I'm getting now. But of course it wasn't 4x4 either.

 

Yes, my truck to trade in is a F150. It gets 14 mpg. And at 170,000 miles it has plenty wrong with it!

The dealer website says this Tacoma should get about 22 or so. I'd be very happy with that! I've always heard good things about Toyotas, but I've never owned one. I can't wait!

Only thing I'm kinda bummed about is that it's the v6, not the 4, but I guess that's not the end of the world.

get a good mechanic you can trust. not some random lube shop....they will bend you over..

Couple suggestions:

With 100k on the odo, there are a few things that need to be looked at. These are pretty reliable trucks, but even moreso when properly cared for. First things that come to mind are spark plugs and driveline. If there are no service records indicating scheduled maintenance, a competent mechanic will be needed to service the driveline including changing gear oil. Change the air filter and spark plugs, also . Inspecting the brakes, and steering components is also a good idea. At this milage, the truck is also past due for a transmission service if it has not been done.

Not trying to bring you down on this glorious occasion, just trying to help you get the best possible experience out of your new purchase. Hopefully, all the above mentioned services are completed and documented already. If not, I strongly recommend having them done. This will give your truck the ability to perform its best for you, and also give you a definitive base line for a future maintenance schedule.

Well I'll start by putting that new air filter in it, and then I'll have to see how much money I have for extras.

The brakes, air filter and oil & filter were all done at the dealership; I have documentation.

I have a checklist of all the things that were checked, but I'm not sure if they were actually 'done' or just checked.

I will ask about the sparkplugs, driveline/ gear oil, transmission, and steering.

Welcome to TW, OP! My taco is an '05, and had 100k on it when I bought it. As long the truck has been maintained, 100k is nothing for a Toyota.
