But my Jeep may crap out soon and am curious about a Toyota SUV or Truck. Any advice?

 

What are you wanting this vehicle for primarily?
I jeep is a very capable rig stock, as you already know.
Our trucks make for a great combo rig, good on trails and as Daily Drivers.
Can certainly tow more with the truck.

EDIT: I would get a 1st gen tacoma with the 3.4l and TRD package. The first gen tacomas are built better than the 2nd gen tacomas.

 

The title and thread kinda contrast eachother..... Go with the taco their worth it.

 

What can I say, I am indecisive...

Have a lot of sports gear: skis, bikes. Don't want them getting stolen.

 

The 4runner is a very nice and capable vehicle. You could get a truck and put a shell on it. Depending on how hard you wheel would be the deciding factor in my opinion.

 

Do you want to buy new or used?

Sounds like a Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed would be the best for you. You can always add a camper to protect your sports gear.

 

True, the First Gen frames last at least 10 years before they rust through.

Edit: We joke but both Generations have their pros and cons, I don't think you can go wrong either way.

 

Long beds are not available with the TRD Off Road Package as well as being too long for trails that Jeeps are used to. The Off Road package has additional traction that no other Tacoma has (Rear locking differential and on 2009 or newer Tacomas the A-TRAC which is like having automatic front and rear lockers when in low range). If not a Tacoma than an FJ Cruiser or 4Runner...? I was a former Jeep owner, and the difference between Jeep and Toyota is night and day... quality parts and build. You don't need to save up for repairs on a Toyota like you do on a JEEP (Just Empty Every Pocket) vehicle.

Also I have a daughter, so I would need a car seat in the back for the day to day grind.

 

Runner would have more room. OOB, FJ is probably more capable off-road. Definitely has more off-road niceties than the Runner from the factory.

 

It was a 1975-1/2 Cherokee Chief.... when the Chief package first came out (using the Jeep J-10 truck axles for wider track vs. the Wagoneer axles of the standard Cherokee... and had the wider wheel wells... Levi seats, 401 V-8, Quadra Trac full time 4WD, 2 speed transfer case and center differential locker). Almost everything failed in the 2 years I owned it (water pump, rear widow motor, window handle, radiator, automatic transmission was a GM Turbo 400 and it needed a rebuild, low range ... all in two years on a new vehicle (any wonder AMC failed?)!

My wife had a '79 CJ-5 Renegade with the 304 V-8... and hers was excellent, she had it for 19 years until her son flipped it on the freeway because the tranny or ? 'locked up' and it endo'd! Now we both have Toyotas, and no more problems with cars!

As for the 4Runner vs. an FJ Cruiser... go to some Toyota dealers and see which you like... just make sure the one you get has A-TRAC (as not all models do)!

 

I'm a Jeep owner too(96 cherokee 4.0 str8 6). I think I have a strong 3 - 5 years left in it but I need a truck and in my investigations I've found that it's only the Tacoma that qualifies for my needs. 1 question for u Jeep owners turned Tacomaniacs, hows the power comparison - greater, lesser, a little feedback pleeze.

 

I came from a '93 XJ 4x4 4.0L 5sp that I bought new and gave to my dad with 300k+miles. He is still driving it around as a farm vehicle. I went to a 4cyl Access Cab 4x4.
The Tacoma is a much more finished vehicle. Quieter, ABS/Traction Control/Stability Control/etc, better interior.
The Cherokee had more power than the 4cyl and felt quicker in every way. I doubt it would be much different than the V6 Tacoma. It also had a smaller turning radius and in general felt more balanced in the snow and off road. I loved that Jeep but I also love the utility of having a pickup.
Interestingly enough, I had a lifetime average of 21.7mpg in the Jeep and am only a half a mpg above that with the 4cyl Tacoma.
The Cherokee was just a well balanced vehicle from the weight and power standpoint. Replaced the clutch at 250k and tires every 100k.

Thanks for the feed back, I think I will go in and take a look after researching some of those features, like the A-trac.

 

I went from a 97' Jeep (drove it for 10 yrs) to an 06 DCSB Sport. Love it. If I take the Jeep out for a spin on the weekends (still have it), when i get back in my Taco, it feels like i'm driving a cadillac...lol.

 

I have had 3 jeeps, 1984 CJ7, 2000 Cherokee, 2006 Wrangler Unlimited.
