out with the Jeep, in with the Tacoma...

Hey 'yall,

I just traded a 2005 Rubicon and a 2002 Taco 4x2 for a new 4x4 regular cab 2.7L 4 cylinder. The gas milage on the Jeep (13 at best) was killing me. The 02 had 137K on it and never had a problem.

I am keeping the stock wheels but would like to add some bigger meats... BFG's for sure. Any suggestions on how big I can go without crushing gas milage or voiding the factory warranty?

Also, any suggestions on a simple air intake system to boost performance and milage?

Congrats! Just to clarify, what is your definition of "crushing gas mileage"?

As far as your factory warranty goes, bigger tires won't void it unless they can prove that the bigger tires caused whatever might be wrong with it. Also, are you planning to lift it at all before installing said tires?

Thanks for the reply. I don't plan on lifting the rig. I do a lot of hiking and backpacking. The Jeep was overkill for what I do... don't generally need that much clearance or torque to take me and my backpack to the woods. The factory tires are very car like, so I'll likely go to 255's or 265's now knowing it won't void the warranty. Thanks again! -Dave

 

Also, if you go with an all terrain tread patter rather than mud terrain, it'll help keep the ride quiet and not hurt the gas mileage as much as the muds would.
