So I have truck... problem is it's not a Toyota :-/ Looking into getting a 05+ Taco with a manual trans. Looking to buy used and feel like doing a little research first. I want the 6 speed but not sure if there are known issues or a reason I should opt for the 5 speed instead. Truck would be used occasionally to tow a trailer with up to 4 sport quads and since i live in utah it will need to tow up some decent inclines. Likely going to be a TRD Xtra cab because I want the longer bed and the 4 doors would make it too long for my liking when it comes to playing in the snow and mud.

Since I'll be buying used are there any known issues to look out for? Of course when I purchase the truck there will be pix to be had lol.

    thanks in advance Dustin

Wow it has been awhile since I've been on here... Here's the scoop, bought a Magnetic Grey Metallic 14' DC TRD off road with the manual 6 speed trans in early Dec. Test drove it with 4 Miles on the OD left that night with 10 miles.

I've towed a tiny trailer to haul two couches home last weekend. But this summer ill have a trailer with four quads on it going up a decent grade... Got to play in the snow a bit and mess around with the 4X4 system a bit :) So far I LOVE my new Tacoma! Already looking a mild lift just need to do more research. Read through some posts about 5100,s but need to read up on what OME has to offer. Any pointers? Also looking into some Wrangler Dura Tracs

I was not aware of any meets. I would love to go wheeling more but I do not have the extra money to break stuff ;) . I keep my ATV for that until I do the things I want to my truck.

Timmy, I'm up in Layton fairly often or at least pass through Layton on my way to Roy on Sundays. Id like to meet up for some grub ( possibly Gabor Bro's or Roosters) and look at your OME Setup, im trying to familiar myself with the various options because im new to the 05-14 tacoma's and not sure what will suit me best.

So are you talking about going up Parleys, or any of the Uintas (Cottonwoods, Emigration, American Fork, or Provo)?!?

If you talking 4wheeling up there, then you will need plenty of power to tow, I mean Parley's is no joke. Of course it is main freeway to get up into the goodness, to all the lakes and stuff. That is where the big mountain trail roads are, with classic camping, and hunting.

If you talking about going out in West Desert, or anything south of Utah County, your not talking as big of hills, your talking little to no hills. I mean you can get to Little Sahara on all highway, without any major incline.

If your talking Parley's and going up those Canyons, then your not going to tow anything without the V6 option, and even then, I don't know if you could even make it with 4 four-wheelers. I had a V8 Ram that had hard time getting up there, and I would tow a small boat, like a regular 16 footer with no cabin.

That Gen 2 4.0L V6 says it has 6500 towing. I don't want to disrespect Taco owners, but these trucks are not great towing vehicles...at all. If you got a Tundra with a V8, then that is another story, even the 14' Tundra with 5.7L V8 still only gets 10,500. For reference, my old 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab, which is base model with V8, and it could do 12,500 pounds.

Yeah I was referring to Parleys ect. I have a family cabin off highway 150 (mirror lake highway) that I tow quads up too during the summer and in the future ill be towing two snow mobiles in the winter up there. But I have already purchased my truck, '14 TRD OFF ROAD DBL CAB with the 6 speed Manual. I'll just keep it in a lower gear and stay to the right when pulling Parleys Summit.
