for that price I would get a far superior V6 5speed 4x4 first gen with an extra cab.

I did, like I said I'm needing to buy in the next 6 months or so and before I buy I need to do a lot more research than I have.

But thanks for the tip (that they go quickly). I'm not ready yet to buy a 1996 over a 2005 if all I need is a base 4x4, again that's 50% more expensive, but in the long run for what I'm needing it for not that much. So this was an exercise in determining a realistic budget and what's out there.

Amen to that. I was ready to buy two tacomas before the one I actually got, but they had already been sold only a few days after listing them. The one I got, we got from a dealer (friend of ours) before the truck actually made it to the lot. These things sell fast so you have to keep an eye out and be ready to jump on one!

    Tertius,

Sorry, I only pointed those out because they were close to your stated budget...

    Good luck with your quest...

Looks pretty solid to me. Also, try checking Craigslist if you haven't already. That's where I got my truck.

Craigslist is good. Got mine on autotrader. It's mostly dealers though.
