Hello, I've been lurking on the forum for a long time now and had a quick question for you guys about wheel bearings. My 2005 Toyota Tacoma has been making a humming noise from the driver side pax side for some time now. I work oversea's most of of the year and have finally managed to get some time to bring it in to the local Toyota dealership in Baltimore, Maryland. DarCars Toyota has said the noise that I hear is from a wheel bearing, you hear it constantly until you turn the truck to the right and it seems to disappear... but what I am confused about is the price of replacing a simple bearing? They have estimated it to be a little over $1000 dollars and it seemed kind of steep to me.... Could someone please shed some light in the reasoning of this price that has been quoted and why it would be so expensive to replace one wheel bearing at a cost of $1000 ? Thanks in advance guys.

    Kind regards!

I am a bit surprised about the $90 "shop fee"? WTF is that? I would refuse to pay that for sure. As for their reasoning behind the price, in order to replace the bearing itself they have to remove the hub, press out the old one and press in a new one, then reinstall. If you have some technical experience you can do it yourself. I sell the entire hub assembly (See link in my signature) for only $199 each. Included with the hub bearing assemblies are instructions on how to replace them yourself. This would be a huge savings, and for less than HALF of what they want, you could get a PAIR of bearings from me.

Thank you, I may consider... I am working on finding someone reputable that can assist me in learning how to replace the bearing as we speak... I was just confused as to the price difference. I went to another mechanic before I went there and they said parts and labor would be around 350 and they would give me a discount for being prior military... Just gotta find out a little more about it and make an accurate decision... thank you for the info everything helps

You got it. As for how to replace them, you will need access to a torque wrench that can be set above 300 ft-lbs, as well as a jack, jack stand (for safety) and basic hand tools.

The rough of it is jack the vehicle up, place jack stands under it.
    Remove wheel
    Remove brake caliper and bracket
    Remove rotor
Remove dust cover from center of hub
    Remove CV axle nut
Remove 4 hub bearing mounting bolts
    Remove hub assembly

If you get my assemblies then you just have to reverse from there.

I just replaced(about 2000miles ago) both fronts with complete hub/bearing assemblies and had never done it before, It turned out to be very simple. Save your money! Do it yourself!

Let me know if you need a set. You can't buy them complete from a parts store, or Toyota. I would be happy to take care of it obviously, since I sell them! Hahaha. I have the equally lowest price you can find them for anywhere at the moment.
