Hey guys I' ve been a member for several months now but have not posted anything here. Great site by the way.... I have a question and I hope that someone could help me, i've changed my oil for the first time yesterday since i bought my 2012 taco, i used mobil 1 which i always use on my other car and ofcourse i also replaced the oil filter (fram) and air filter as well (fram). While driving today, i heard a clacking noise that seems to be coming from the engine, the noise comes and go or just everytime i accerelate. I wonder what is causing it? Should i be concern about it? Please help!

It sound like the engine is "pinging". Mostly only older engines do this. This is usually associated with bad/cheap gas. Did you fill it up with a different gas by chance?

that's something you would want to be sure on

I always use the Toyota oil filter on oil changes, there's a nice write up about filters on here.

maybe take a vid to document the noise?

    and welcome to TW

    +1
Toyota filters are better than Fram (a roll of toilet paper is better than Fram) and they're only $4-$5 if you buy a box of 10.

    6 quarts, right?

If it did not have oil, it would not have made it far at all, correct? And a cloud ou white smoke would hint to the seizing of the engine. Might just not have enough oil.

If everything is good in terms of .....Oil, etc.

You're still under warranty - take it to the dealer. Better safe than sorry to have it 'on file' now if something worse develops later.

If it's within the two dots of the dipstick then you're good. At first read I'm thinking the sound is the lifters. Check your oil level again.

I checked the oil level again yesterday (several times) and it is in the middle of the two dotted lines:)

I highly doubt its the filter. I've used Frams on my Jeep for years. Unless the filter was 'faulty' from the factory and it exploded internally - its not the filter causing your noises.

Do not put in 6..... That would be OVER filling.

Overfilling can be almost as harmful as overfilling.

If I'm reading everything correctly - You put 5.5 quarts in and the oil level is in the middle of the two dots?

Are you on a level surface when reading the dipstick?

If you have a 4.0L and put 5.5quarts in, that oil level should be at the top dot on the dipstick (on level ground). If its only at 1/2 way.....something doesn't sound right.

Are you seeing any oil drips, puddles, residue on the underside of the truck? Any white smoke coming out the exhaust?
