I've got a 1998 Tacoma and when I turn the heater on it smells like antifreeze and fogs up the window. I suspect it could be a leaky heater core. I don't have any apparent leaks anywhere and the AC is fine. I'm curious with this year model if it's major work to replace the heater core if that's what it is. Also, I'm curious if the leak could be somewhere other than the heater core itself . . . or is there another solution besides replacing?

    Thanks,
    Jarrod

Aloha and welcome Jarrod, I'm a second Gen (Generation) guy but if you post this question on the first gen area you will get a quicker response. This area is only really to introduce yourself. Good luck!

Have you checked your radiator fluid levels & over flow tank level?

Other than looking around for leaks... I would top off both your radiator (if needed) and the overflow tank to its required level. Check the levels every day or every few days and take notice if the fluid level drops (particularly in over-flow tank). If you're loosing fluid, you obviously have a leak.....

You could have your cooling system pressure tested.

Never did it myself and I'm not sure you could actually 'see' a leak at heater core. But...worth a try.
