Actually my a/c has not worked for 2 years, the mechanic at my local garage said that the compressor "blew up internally" and sent metal scraps all through the system meaning that the entire system would have to be replaced , more than its worth. Does he know what he's talking about.

No there is an a/c system flush that you can use to back flush the lines and components you only need to replace the compressor and the reciever/dryer

I have heard of this problem before, but no actual experience.

There is no way any of us can determine if a mechanic "knows what he's talking about". If he's has training and certificates, then one would assume that he does. If you don't trust him, then get a second opinion from a shop that specialized in A/C.

A back flush helps. But there could still be metal in the ac condenser. You run the chance of destroying new compressor.
