Just joined TW, stuck in the desert, and missing my truck!

Hello all,

I joined TW a couple of days ago and I'm already finding alot of good info. Bought my Tacoma about 6 months ago, but only drove for about the first three. Unfortunately I'm stuck on a deployment until early Jan. Before I left I was able to throw on a bull bar and some light force lights. Damn those are cool lights! My second Toyota, but my first new one. My first was an '88 Supra Turbo. It was a little run down.

Right now I am looking into a 3" Toytec lift and probably tires somewhere around 33's. Any pointers or suggestions would be great. I would like to stick with the stock 17" rims, but not sure how well that is going to work out with the larger tires. And I've pretty much decided to go with blocks instead of AAL in the back. See everyone around the forums.

Justin

Ditch the blocks, they will give you a lot of axle wrap and prematurely sag your rear leaf packs. I would say go with AALs or shackles for the rear.

Hey humanoid

Thanks for the pointer. The main reason I had pretty much decided to go that route was because Toytec suggested it. I was also going to get the center bearing drop kit. Would that help alleviate that problem?

Welcome to TW Justin. I think I would go crazy if I had just purchased my truck and then I had to quit driving it for several months. Bummer!

I'm unsure about the center bearing drop for a 3" lift, I'm guessing you won't need one, but don't quote me on that. What problem are you having or trying to avoid with the bearing drop?

Smile

Thanks rhoppas and jhodge......I can't wait to get back. I'm getting ready to miss it's first snow season.

Thanks for sticking with me humanoid. I've heard that when adding a lift kit it usually causes vibration in the driveline caused by the increased angle. I guess maybe I should have called it a carrier bearing instead of a center bearing.

Do you have any experience with front diff. drop kits?

Thanks again,
Justin

Lift vibration

I did have some vibration after installing my TuffCountry 3" lift. There was nothing in the instructions so I called TuffCountry. They said to lower the carrier bearing w/ shims until it was better. I did and it worked. I have just a slight vibration now at initial start. Before it had carried through 35 mph. Now that is gone. I guess you have to give and take w/ some of these mods.

AFAIK, you won't need a diff drop for the 3" lift, but there are differing opinions on this so I'll let the more knowledgeable ones chime in on this.
