Hi! I need to buy a used Tacoma, ZERO experience

Hi, thanks for this forum.
I've been driving a '99 Tacoma PreRunner TRD 2WD since 2000 - but I shared it with family members and didn't ever really own it. Now I'm looking for my own- a used one- and my budget is limited to about 14-18K and would be paying cash. I have absolutely no idea what to look for or how to find one, besides autotrader, carmax, etc. etc. All the good used ones seem so pricey. I've also grown very comfortable with the TRD and absolutely need 4WD because winters were a nightmare in the 2WD. Also, I need the access cab for sure, as I can't imagine not having that storage space.

I live in the metro Washington, DC area but would travel for a good deal.

Anyone got any tips? How do I know I'm not buying a lemon? Is Craigslist safe?

There are tacomas for sale on this site. 1st gen for sale,2nd gen for sale. Might find those forums to your liking. Make sure when you find something you like to get maintenance history, carfax. Frame rust is big issue. If you find one put pics or link and ask what members think. Some trucks for sale here are well known and usually maintained.
