    Hi all,

I'm not officially part of the club yet but looking for a good deal on a used Tacoma, my searches brought me here so I've started mining the forums for advice on what to look for or look out for. This is a great community with a ton of information, I can't wait to start tweaking my new truck.

My goal is a 2000-ish Tacoma Extended Cab 4WD, I'm trying to find out if SR5 and TRD will mean that much, especially if I can keep the price down.

    Cheers,
    Jody

Welcome Jody. SR5 translates mostly into the modern power amenities, power windows, mirrors and such (I think). The TRD package will offer you an offroad tuned suspension with Bilstein shocks, an electric rear differential locker, and that TRD sticker on the back end of the truck. The TRD package is nice, but if you stay mostly on the roads, you can save a buck and do without. Good luck on your search and make sure the frame is solid (no rust through).

You can save some money with just the Prerunner SR5. That will give you the lifted look without any of the off road parts or price. Google Tacoma SR5, Prerunner, Off Road and Sport, you can seen the difference.
Good luck and welcome to TW

Thanks for the tips guys, I just found a couple of old posts about what to look for when buying used which makes me feel a bit better about getting something with a few more miles but I think 100k is about my cap.

I've seen some prerunners that looked ok but got the impression that this was the "street" package and didn't include 4WD either. If I would accept a 2x4 then there are lots of trucks around here but I want some power up front too.

Nice to know that I could add the equivalent or better of the TRD parts on my own over time if I want so I'm not as worried about getting that. It will mostly be on the road for now but once i've settled into it I might gear it more for off road.

If I settle on a 100k mile truck then the big thing is frame rust (I hadn't even thought about) and the timing belt, any other big ones to watch out for?

    Thanks again!

Thanks for all the greets! (c:

I'm not sure where to ask opinions but I have two Tacos i'm going to check out at a local dealership, their price is in line with KBB but the mileage still scares me.

2003 Tacoma with 208k miles - 11,900 (might be able to get him down to 11,000)
    http://www.mountainstatestoyota.com...tm?vehicleId=e4cbbd484046381e00779d177b79c2bc

    1999 Tacoma with 149k miles - 9,900 (he's already said he'd go to 9,500)
    http://www.mountainstatestoyota.com...tm?vehicleId=f9c2766b7f00000100dfa65ce0a83f34

Looking for the wisdom of the crowd on this one. Hopefully its not asking for trouble but I might repost this question in another thread as well.

Prices vary depending on location, but that 1st one seems way overpriced to me. 2 years ago, I paid $13,000 at a dealer for an 02 V6 4x4 TRD Offroad with leather and half of the miles (103k). One thing about the 1st generation Tacomas (95-04) is they are getting harder and harder to find. It is important that you are patient in your search. I looked for 6 months before I found one that I was satisfied with.
