DH and I are avid Toyota owners. We have a 1995 Toyota "truck," (no other labels for truck), as well as a Highlander. We hope to become Tacoma owners in a couple of months, as soon as our local dealer finds us a Tacoma with the features we want/need. We are joining this forum to become better informed about the Tacoma.

Welcome! I had a 94 toy truck with no other name and an 84 before that, and you will be amazed at the difference. Those early hiluxs were small trucks, but tacos, at least the the second gens, are mid sized trucks. It was a huge difference for me. ;)

    Rosebud,
We love our '95 "reliable/low-maintenance" truck. We planned to keep it "forever," but need a tow vehicle for our recently purchased travel trailer. In fact, we'll sell our truck to our son when we purchase a Tacoma.
We're looking for a Barcelona red/ TRD Sport or Off-Road pkg., 4x4, DC, with tow pkg. Having a difficult time deciding between sport and off-road. The salesman indicated that the off-road was better suited to towing because of the lower gear (rpm), at least that's what a customer had told him but he couldn't adequately explain the difference to us. I wanted the Sport pkg. because I thought it would be a smoother ride on the highway. DH likes the "scoop hood" on the Sport, but prefer a chrome bumber (off-road).

The off-road vs sport has the same gearing ratios... and the same suspension it's just tuned differently. The primary diffrence is the locker vs LSD. If you're just doing street and towing, the LSD is probably more suited to your needs and better behaved on the pavement. If you're gunna hit the trails... a locker is invaluable. Otherwise personally I love the color matched pieces on the sport but that's easy enough to fix on the off-road :D I've also never been a big fan of the fake hood scoops either...

Either way, you'll be getting an awesome truck if you go for it, good luck with the hunt and make sure you talk the price down!

The dealer found us a truck with all the features we were looking for and we bought it Tuesday. Barcelona red, Sport pkg with bluetooth, auto, 4x4, with towing pkg. We decided on Sport vs. Off-road based on comments on the forum.
After driving a white truck for 14 years, we feel very conspicuous driving a red truck...and are careful to drive within the speed limit especially in school zones.
The visibility of the hood scoop from the front seat surprised us (It's very evident), but we're still glad we chose the Sport.
We're loving the free trial XM satellite radio; love the variety.
The instrument panel lights are red; would have preferred green, but that's minor.
Bottom line...we're very thankful to have this truck and hope to keep it for a long time.
