I was told by the dealer not to remove the secondary air filter because it would cause the engine to run poorly, my 2006 has 105,000 miles on it now and the gas mileage seems to be improving as it gets older up to 23 MPG with real gas not that E85 crap. So does anyone know what the true function of the secondary air filter is, and is there any down side by removing it?

It's to catch backflowing emissions after the engine is shut off. A california inspection requirement. There's apparently a slight performance gain with removing it. More so with the 4 cyl.

No gain removing it on the 4.0.

No. Its just a charcoal filter. Its to "catch" gasoline fumes that can escape thru the intake when the engine is not running.
