Painting Stock wheels

Sup Fellas,

I have my stock 17" alloy rims on my 06 TRD Tacoma and I like how the rims look on the truck. For some weird reason its been a pain looking for a set of black wheels that I like. I thought about painting the current ones that I have on black. Have any of you guys done this? if so, how did they come out? if you guys have advice on how to paint them properly that would be helpfull As well.

Thanks! I looked around and found some pics plus I found out that powder coating them is the best way to go

 

I painted mine, turned out great! I constantly get compliments. One thing I have not seen on any threads thus far on this subject: center cap chipping. I used Krylon Fusion for plastic on the center cap as a primer and then used the high temp flat black paint i painted the metal wheel surface with over that to match exactly. The only time I have had chips was when the guys at the tire store got a little carried away with the impact. I just bought the trail teams FJ edition black center caps and am planning on putting those on. no more chipped center caps!

paint them, you'll be happy, just read all the info on here and take your time.

one more thing: i have noticed some paint over the clear coat and some remove it. Walmart sells something in the auto paint section called Aircraft stripper, takes the clear coat right off. It's an aresol. I did this and then used duplicolor self etching primer. I really think this method is why i got such great results.

 

I used rustoleum self etching primer. Then rustoleum black wheel paint. Came out perfect. People think I got it powdercoated.

 

i used the same exact products as jdkeller bought everything at my local walmart for like a total of 10 bucks or yea and a monster lol
