Differential Issues?

I recently changed my differential fluid at 33,000 with Royal Purple Gear Oil 75-90W with LSD (Limited Slip Differential). I put in 3 quarts in rear end and I felt rear end gear vibrating from the drivers seat when turning tight turns. So I lifted the axle of the fill hole side of differential and added another quart of 75-90W and still have vibrating feel with teeth meshing together in the pumpkin. No noise or sounds coming from rear end and only doing vibrating when moving slow. If any has experienced this please in lighten me on what to do? Thanks.

 

I'm somewhat confused about what you're saying....

How did you put the first 3 quarts of oil in?

Why did you add a 4th quart? Adding more oil isn't gonna fix the problem. In fact...having too much oil in there can be just as bad as not having enough.

Are you sure you put the proper oil & additive in there?

 

I unbolted the filler bolt in the differential which was pressurized then I unbolted the drain bolt at the bottom of differential and drained the differential fluid. I went down to 4 wheel parts a few days before hand and purchased the gear oil 75-90w there and they told me I would only need 3 quarts. But I thought I need 1 more cause it was still vibrating. It was the right stuff.

Because he has 33,000 miles on it. Diff fluid changes are due at 30K miles.

 

Having the additive in a non-LSD diff shouldn't matter.

 

How pressurized? It shouldn't be pressurized.... Check your 'breather' and make sure its not clogged.

First off, you need to put the truck on level ground. Open up the fill plug and let the excess oil drain out of the fill hole. The fill hole is there for a reason, so you don't overfill it. As I mentioned before, over-filling can be just as harmful as not having enough oil.

Have you been driving it for a few days? Is it still vibrating? When does it vibrate? Do some tight '8' circles in both directions several times, what does it do?

 

If you have a LSD you need to use regular 80w-90 oil with a tube of LSD additive, other members have done different and ended up with problems like yours.

x2, I'd like to run syn in the rear, but just change it out every 30k with the dino and no chatter here..

 

Ok, latest update. I know I said I put in 3 & 3/4 of quarts in the differential with LSD 75-90w of Royal Purple. Well I went down to the local Auto Zone and bought a tube of Trans-X, POSI-TRAC limited slip gear oil additive, it was $5.50. It says on the tube it prevents chattering, which I had, jerking & slipping. So I removed 1 quart of R.P. LSD from the fill hole. All I did was remove the bolt from the filler hole and it started draining out all by its self. Then I inserted this tube that I have that sucks liquid out of containers and sucked out 1 hole quart and added this tube of TRANS-X which is 7 fl.oz. and then I screwed the filler bolt back on. Took it on a test drive and did some figure 8s and did a little off roading to test the limited slip & and it worked. Thanks guys for all you input.

 

Give it time..... damage doesn't always happen immediately.
