hey guys. been a while since i posted in here but hoping someone can give me a little insight to some things that happened to my 4runner recently.

so my battery died 2 days ago, completely dead couldnt even get it to jump start.

left it at work overnight disconnected so im guessing the computer reset.

went out and got a optima yellow top and hooked it up the next morning and went to work. the car started on the very first try and everything seemed normal except:

the auto feature for the windows was not working, and then my driver side window completely stopped working.

i had a really rough idle (less than 500rpm)

the windows fixed themselves while i was driving home, but my radio is not working. it lights up but no sound.

im wondering if the rough idle will fix itself also. i went to beaverton toyota(who were slightly rude to me) to ask them to just reset the computer or something and he started telling me i must have unhooked a vaccum hose while i was changing the battery :confused:

anyway dont really want to go back there so if anyones got a good shop in beaverton let me know.

You probably need to normalize your windows. There is a procedure I follow for my wife's Lexus and there might be something similar for the T4R.

^^^ Sorry that was more for the window situation. I don't have any explanation for the rough idle.

There was a 1st gen thread on this exact issue when changing the battery:
The Throttle Body is reset to original position as if it was brand new without crap in the throttle body or MAF or plugs are new or filters are new, etc. It takes just driving 4RN around and it "learns" to compensate for the current state of the plugs, MAF, TB, filters, etc.

I am planning on a red or yellow optima but don't know the exact difference...

alright well thats good to know i guess. hopefully it'll work itself out.

as for the red and yellow tops. i know that the yellow top is good for cold weather. something about the cold cranking amps. Thats the main reason i got it, for when i go up to mt. hood.

I think the red is made for if you have alot of auxiliary electronics.

check out Mobile West on Broadway in NE Portland. They are just down the street from Broadway Toyota.

Great guys. I got my sub through them. They deal with a little higher end stuff and clients.

Yellow is made for deep cycles. They are made for people who have a lot of lights/winches that use a lot of battery. They are actually made to be drained completely then recharged.

The optimas suck! Don't buy optima. They're surviving solely on the name they built themselves in the past. I've heard that the newer optimas die in a year or two from quite a few people.

Go to sears and get a heavy duty die hard. They have deep cycles available. I BELIEVE the platinum die hard batteries are rebranded odyssey batteries, and odyssey batteries RULE

    mostly stock
I have about a dozen large diesel generators at work that use Optima's, as well as two yellow tops and a red top in the taco, and two yellow tops in my RV. I also used them in the Army for ten years in all kinds of equipment. I have had some minor issues with the newer ones with the "made in mexico" sticker on them, but nothing serious. One of the yellow tops on the RV was dead as a doornail (left a light on) and I recharged it on the 10 amp setting. It got hot after a few hours and hyrdogen was boiling out of it. Luckily it didn't grenade, but that was kinda my fault. I let it cool and trickle charged it and it's fine, although it doesn't hold 13.8V like it used to. The other issue was using a red top in series with a yellow top to weld all of the tabs and brackets on my new axle. I welded for almost an hour straight, and the readywelder was drawing some serious amps. The red top side post couldn't keep up, and it blew out. Obviously also my fault. Other than that, I have seen one yellow top just up and die on an offroad trip on the Mojave Trail. It was in a mid travel truck that was keeping up with my LT truck for about 80 miles of whoops. It had a rough life.
