    you should look into buying a lower end bike and then upgrading the components.

    unless you are super tall, a carbon frame wont be THAT much lighter than aluminum. the main thing i dont like about carbon frames is that once you get the tiniest crack in the frame, the entire thing could just break on you while your coming down a hill or something.

    what i would recommend is getting something decent (i bought a new 09 specialized allez sport) for about 1000.

    then upgrading the components that are important to you.

    i upgraded the gear set to shimano 105 (which i would compare to upgrading a stock suspension to 5100s)

    aside from the frame, the gear set is where alot of the money is going. unless your going to be racing it, i dont really think any gear set above the shimano ultegra is worth it.


    you should have zero problems putting on a new gear set by yourself. you will need a few unique tools though.

    Not buying a bike anymore since I don't really have the money for it. I was going to pick up a Specialized Tarmac Elite, but I don't want to spend the money yet.

    KTM's 990 or.... KTM's 1290 super duke R... pick one for me lol

    I love dual sports, ride in all weather and where ever I want to venture. Which, is a lot of places a street bike cant go. But, the damn 1290 is just so damn awesome. Not as fast as others since lack of plastics for aerodynamics, but come on... That thing seriously gives me a chubby :rofl:

    Draw backs i see, I work when its nice. Which means the 1290 wouldnt be out much. As for the 990, go out in everything except snow storms or ice pretty much. But, not crazy sexy and scary as the 1290. Damn decisions lol.

    Do the forum a favor, and do a brake swap thread with pics. I would like to do a tundra brake swap, but changing the proportioning for the rear discs instead of drums is over my head without looking into it. Also, I don't have money for mods for a long while.

    Get the dual sport and ride it all the time. Think about where you will get more of your money's worth. If you are very limited on when you can ride the 1290, then you get say 300 hours a year out of it versus riding the 990 all the time and getting 1000+ hours a year of ride time. I'm not much into bikes, but from friends of mine who are, the bigger motors only give a little more acceleration at lower speeds, but give more high speed ability.

    I say wait for the 1290 super adventure. That is supposed to be one ridiculous machine, and arguably the most powerful dirt bike ever built. That said, I love my 990 a lot. Like ride it every day even though I have a LT taco a lot. It's one amazing machine, and it's embarrassed a lot of well tuned sport bikes... I am a nutjob and rarely think "I need mo' power" when riding the 990. I have tuned it up a little, around 120hp at the crank is enough 99.7% of the time on the street, and more than enough in the dirt. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, feel free to take it for a rip.

    Rob, if you were asking me, I have to lol... yeah I'm a research whore, but I'd still pee myself before taking a bike where you do.

    It sounds like you already answered your question - the bike that is the most fun is the one you want to ride the most. The 1290 is going to sit in your front room and you'll have a little dust broom to keep it tidy :rolleyes:

    The 990 looks like a hopped up KLR, so yeah I get what you are saying about looks. Does it have to be KTM? There's others out there.

    Think carefully about your purpose on the bike. When I was reading reviews of my bike, there was a guy comparing it to his YZ450F. He loved his 450, but after riding the WRR, he realized that the 450 was great as a track bike and hauled ass when you could take it off leash, but it was really boring on the trail. The WRR was more fun on the trail because he could toss it around and he was constantly mashing it into the powerband, really experiencing the bike do some work. The WRR started becoming a tiresome bike once he reached the road... because he'd put it away and take out a sport bike.

    My dad has had his FZ6R for just about as long as I've had my bike, and he's starting to second guess his purchase. It looks great and all, but it sucks to commute long distances on and it's not about to go on forest service roads. He really should have gotten a DS like I told him to. His big issue is that he is short and won't straddle anything taller than 800mm (31 inches)

    I guess my long rambling message is that you need to buy the bike that fits what you want to do and can't do (or sucks to do) right now.

    You watch your whore mouth. :D Ya, there are other bikes. There are not other bikes with as much suspension travel and horsepower in one machine though. It's difficult to put into words, but when you are doing 60mph down a dirt two track, crack the throttle open and chunks of earth rain down for 100 yards behind you there is just something magical about that. It's what we've dreamed of since we were ten, and it's just the kind of bike that makes you feel like a kid again. It's not reasonable in any way. Nobody "needs" a dirt bike that will do 140mph. If you have a screw loose and are nuttier than a squirrel turd like I am, it's the only choice out there. Well, until the Super Adventure comes out. ;)
