Tillamook State Forest Pictures and Video thread

Hey guys, since we do the annual meetup, I thought it would be good to show example videos and pictures so people can get a visual reference and an idea of difficulty

Please post up the name of the trail and the color (green/blue/black/double black/triple black). Any special notes, please add!

Here's reference maps:
How to get there
Maps, rules, and more! Note the updated map for 2014 and downloadable GPS map!

For most blue trails, you can expect tight corners, trees, and roots. This picture illustrates the majority of trails at TSF

Rocky Uphill - Single Black. Trail divides into two sections, the right side is generally harder

Firebreak 5 Rock Garden - I'm not sure if it has a rating. It's a small 100' section or so of what you see below.

Firebreak 5 - single black.
This is easily the most popular trail in the system, and is constantly changing due to heavy use.

Truck Dent

Truck Dent: I don't remember the rating, probably single BLUE (Moderate)This trail was short and a little out of the way, but pretty fun. There is a relatively steep hill-climb, a few ledges, tank traps, and some decent pits to crawl out of. There are also some good lookouts at the top with impressive views of the surrounding hills.

Stick In The Nose

Stick In The Nose: Single BLUE (Moderate) This trail had a fun little rock climb at the beginning which can be tackled from different approaches to increase or decrease difficulty. There is also a fun little rock pile in the middle section (which can be bypassed) and also a little gate-keeper at the end. The rest of the trail was pretty narrow, with some off-camber hills on blind corners that had you questioning where you were gonna end up after cresting the top. There was also an embankment that ran along the passenger-side of the almost the entire trail.

FireFox

Firefox: This trail is sponsored by Warn®. No one in our group had done this before, so we didn't know what to expect. Funny thing is, it's rated 'More Difficult', but it was extremely easy, and judging by the amount of leaves on the trails, it rarely sees any traffic. We were kind of disappointed, but we wanted to give it a try.

Archer's Firebreak & V-Notch Hillclimb

Archer's Firebreak & V-Notch Hillclimb:Not sure the rating, probably BLUE to SINGLE BLACK (since the terrain varies for each section).

This was an awesome trail, I had a lot of fun with the variety of options from each section. This was by far the sloppiest trail we did. Gary and Nate successfully climbed the V-Notch after a few attempts, I gave it a shot and opted not to spend too much time trying to muscle my way up it.

Rocky Uphill (supplemental review)

Rocky Uphill (additional review): This was the most challenging portion of Archer's that we did. We started at the "staging area" by Can Opener, and by this time it was completely dark.

The first part was a breeze after squeezing through the rock-gate. The second section was not too bad, until we got to the Y. I chose the left and made it up to where to two trails merge back together. After fighting with some slick boulders, and re-approaching numerous times, I ended up sliding completely sideways and getting high-centered. Winched out and moved up the trail. Gary powered through the right side after persuading his truck up some nasty roots and boulders. Nate took the left, and got stuck between two boulders with his rear diff. pinned front and back. We had to construct a make-shift ramp out of rocks, and Gary yanked him up and over the rocks. Mike followed on the right, and after some fighting, ended up going up the left side relatively easily.

The last 20 feet of the trail was very difficult for all of us. It must be a little more rooted than normal, and there was a series of rocks/boulders that seemed to hit all 4 tires at the worst section, causing us to lose our forward momentum and traction simultaneously. No matter how we approached it, the thick clay-mud made us slide into the same tracks every time. In the end Gary and I had to go balls-out to power up it (BRAAAAAP), Nate got winched up after giving it MANY attempts, and Mike also clambered up after a lot of frustrating attempts.

Saddle Up

Saddle Up: I don't remember the rating for this one, probably more difficult BLUE or a single BLACK. This is a very short trail, but has a rocky hill that proved fun up or down and it's a good confidence builder to learn the clearances and tolerance of your truck. It also a good tudor to learn how to trust your truck when visibility is low, and learn to let the tires do the navigating for you. (I stole some pics from Bobert and Steve-O )

That's only the gatekeeper to Airplane Hill
Archers is varied, that particular v-notch is unrated. Based on the rest of the park, it's a solid black.

Can Opener - Double Black.
Found as a side route along Archer's Firebreak. This is a short trail, but has a major obstacle forming a cliff that gives it the rating. Despite the angle of the pictures, the rocks are quite large. In picture one, you can see the base with the large rocks forming the cliff. The rocks are about hood height.

Hogs Back (Moderate) has a nice little hill climb at the beginning. It gives you an excellent opportunity to flex out the suspension near the top of the climb.

Another pic of the rock garden on Firebreak 5.

As a testament to the changes on Firebreak 5, this boulder is no longer there.

This section is just below where that boulder used to be.

Going down FB5 in the winter.

A random section of FB5.

Here's Watefall. I believe its a Triple Diamond rating?
This was my first try. Had to winch. I've broken a couple CV's on it and made it up no problem a couple times. Just depends on the conditions and how you hit it. There is a nice gate keeper also.

Another attempt at it. Made it up at the cost of a CV.

A buddy trying it.

No breakage this time.

Rob, the first pic you have labeled Archer's Firebreak is actually the last section of rocky uphill I do believe. That section has changed

The second with Anton is definitely Rocky Uphill, and it's the "left" side if you were standing downhill looking back towards the trucks.
