Beavis since you probably know, is Montana like north CA/Oregon/WA/anywhere with water and dirt in the US as far as weed cultivation goes? Or is it still somewhere you can wander aimlessly outdoors and not yet consider coming into someones grow.

I live in Southern Oregon and we have most of what you are looking for, but the summers get a bit warm for my taste. If I felt like uprooting my entire life I'd probably move to Idaho or Montana.

My twin brother is civil/geotech engineer just down the hill from Truckee, CA and that gets a vote from me. I still love that country. But now I'm Seattle area and I have to reflect what the other folks in this area say - it's absolutely gorgeous here. Plenty of trails around to use your truck and although it doesn't really snow at lower elevations, a trip to the Olympic Peninsula or Cascades will satisfy your skiing and winter sport desires. I hear that Wyoming and Montana are absolutely gorgeous but haven't been there.

A plus for WA, no state income taxes here and sales tax is on par with CA. Plus, from what I gather from my brother, the construction in CA is still very hit and miss with months of nothing to do and other months of not being able to keep up with the demand. I think WA work would be a bit more stable, but it's going to drag you more into the city and to get the ~20k person town, you're gonna have a crappy commute.

Most people will disagree, but ever thought about west virginia? All kinds of trails and off roading, have skiing, white water rafting, hunting, fishing, lots of parks and hiking. Breathtaking scenary in the spring and fall, usually pretty good snows. Mostly nice people, ALL kinds of small towns, depenfing on the area, fairly close to interstate systems, I64, I77, I74. Born and raised here and i dont think i could live anywhere else, maybe tennessee, thats the closest i have found.

Thats true, but this happens about every 10 or so years, i have seen it my whole life. Not saying anything good or bad, but its usually about a 4-5 year drop then it starts to pick back up. Actually, im not a coal miner, my dad, brother, grandfather all were/are, but i chose a different path. Was just letting the OP know there was alot of what he was looking for here, or even living in a neighboring state, like virginia, pennsylvania, ohio, kentucky, those all have pretty good amount to offer as well ya know.

I'm in Spokane. The County has nearly half million people but is spread out to nearly 1800 sq mi. There are some smaller towns outside the city but close to the interstate.
I've been here for 3 years and really enjoy it. We definitely get snow here. Usually a 3-5 feet a year. Winters last about 4 months. Where I live, in north Spokane, I'm about 45 minutes away from Mt Spokane ski lodge. There are plenty of nearby truck trails, camping areas, lakes for boating. Glacier National Park in Montana is within a days drive to the East in Montana. Going West, Seattle is only about 5 hours away.

We have plenty of construction going on in the area so I doubt you would have trouble finding work. I believe our Fire Department is also looking for new guys. Housing is cheap here as well. I've got a 2500 sq ft home built in 2006. 4 bed, 3 full bath, 2 gas fireplaces, huge 3 car garage sitting on an 11000 sq ft lot in a great school district for $200k.

I think I touched on everything you're looking for.
