Trip to tahoe up hwy 50 novice driver

What would you do!?!?

I told my brother he could take either my 07 sequoia 4x4 or my Tacoma 4x4.

I am still debating which would be easier to drive for him.

What would you do!?!?!
Comments, concerns, opinions!?!?!

Let him use whichever one you like the least.

I am not familiar with those two vehicles' drive/traction/control systems, but if the Sequoia has AWD vs. 4WD, I would recommend that.

Also, drill into him that this does not make the vehicle invincible, it only reduces the chances of it getting stuck and elimintaes the need to get out and put chains on (assuming M&S rated tires). Caution is still essential.

And make him read the vehicle's manual.

Edit: Actually, the sequoia will have better rear traction than the empty pickup, too.

Just tell him to take it easy and he will be fine. I just went over the summit in a blizzard and I didn't even put it in 4wd 30mph tops and you won't slide to much if the tires are good.

Sequoia has all those warning lights and beeps in 4x4 that concerns me because they might/ will freak him out and at the same time the light re end of the truck is a concern

Edit first time I drove the sequoia was going up the 50 last year during the storm and I almost sh^t I brick when I heard and saw the sensors beep and flash for the first time.
But on the other hand that think is an absolute beast in the snow/ice

Main thing is probably taking it easy driving up there. Dont be like the other ass hats on the road who is still flying up those roads. Take him out and show him how to use/engage 4x4 lockers ect if he doesnt know. The truck is prob easier to drive but the suv for comfort.

Oh can I borrow your sequoia to take up to tahoe?

I hope he is not doing the drive today. I would have him drive the one that has the best tires. (just opinion of someone sitting here in the snow storm at Tahoe).

def the seqioua, with and empty bed on 50, if u are familiar with it, hell windy, (not wind as in the air, but the road) and mostly a one lane highway and very close to the edge. and take it slow if there is snow on the road. idiots on 50 always fuck it up for everyone else.

x2. My wife and I got stuck up at her Dad's once and couldn't get home because of all the idiots causing spinouts. We gave up the next day and went around the lake and down 80!

And tell them to not drive in the fast lane from Placerville thru Pollock Pines if they're driving slower than everyone else. And the section thru Apple Hill is 65 MPH since Sept 25, 2007, not 45-55 like Tahoe-bound people seem to think! You can always tell the tourists passing through because they stay in the fast lane doing 45-55 and won't move over! Some of us just want to get home before pigs fly.

Thanks for all the advice!! Much appreciated. I know how to drive in the snow and all it is just hard for me to explain it to others!!!

He ended up feeling better in the truck so he took it. He left yesterday from my house in Carmichael. He got there in about 4 hours.
I was talking to him last night and he told me which I already knew was that the worst part was going down pass into tahoe.
He told me that he had to use the low gear to control his speed at the end but other than that even with the rugged fails, the Toyota was a beast.

Thanks again for all your help!!!

I live up here and the roads on my side are bad right now. Tons of ice, not so much snow. I would suggest you give he the vehicle with the best tires, and that he is most comfortable driving. Weight matters but have him go super slow. I have a set up 4x4 tacoma that is built for snow and last night I was doing 5 on highway 50 from heavenly ski resort.... It was so icy!
