Did you get the bushing from Chase?

Yeah, from Chase and also CVJ from the GB. Removal and install tools from Chase also. I'd hate to try this on my own, then run into a problem with the truck apart. That's why at least I could use an extra hand.

There's a mod day on May 5th. There definitely will be a bunch of people to help then.

If San Jose wasn't so darn far, especially at these gas prices, I'd be all over this. If you go to the Mod day, I'd be inclined to go and help.

Yeah, bring it to the mod day.

EDIT: I feel bad that you originally posted up in that thread and I originally replied that I thought you had to completely remove your diff and crack it open... - obviously since then I've found out otherwise.

But we can pop a CV axle out, use that "Chase Bearing Puller" and put the CV back in within the scope of a mod day.

If you decide to take it on before then, this thread:
    http://www6.tacomaterritory.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1730717

will show you the steps to removing the spindle and CV, and getting access to the driver side bearing.

I can't imagine pulling that 35mm axle nut without an electric or air impact wrench. There's just no effin' way.

You'll need a replacement axle cotter pin.

The hardest thing to do the first time you've ever done it, is remove and reinstall the CV axle itself.

You'll want these tools: 4lb hammer and Sears Craftsman prybars (they're in the automotive department, not the tool department, and they come in a pack of 3)

Here's how you position the prybar on the CV axle:

With a closeup on the axle itself:

This bottom pic, shows the axle after it's been driven out of position about an inch and a half, and ready to be removed by hand the rest of the way.

Then an authoritative whack with the 4lb engineer's hammer. Don't try and use a claw hammer - it doesn't convey nearly enough energy.

For reinstalling, it's the opposite. The trick is - the splines on the axle have to be aligned within the splines that accept them within the differential, and that's a "feel" thing. If they're lined up right, one or two "authoritative" whacks will drive it home. If they're not, you can hammer that m*th**f****in CV axle until the splines are actually FLATTENED, ruining it. So the drill is:

"place, WHACK! WHACK! check - is it driving in?" If not repeat from the placement step, don't just keep mindlessly hammering.

BJ. Thanks so much for this info. I really needed that. I'd go to the mod day but can't that day. I need to get this done sooner than later before the growling turns into a lion's roar.

Saw some guys wrap wire around the cv and then use a small sledge to knock it out (slide hammer-esque). It's not too bad getting it out. Nor too bad getting it in.
