Hey all, anyone willing to share a source for steel in the Bay Area? I'm sourcing some for fabbing up a bed rack. Looking for square tubing and angles for the rails. I'm new to this (first project).

Thanks, but it looks like they deal mostly in bulk. I'll stop by the San Jose yard next time I'm up that way and get the full scoop. I'm not looking to start a shop, just some small fab projects for myself and maybe a few buddies :)

I got my metal there. Their only requirement is you spend $30. They have a entrance for regular sales. Not the bulk you see on the website.

    Link to their store:

Metal Supermarkets. There is a place near the SJ airport that used to be a Metal Supermarket, now its something else. Simms metal on Monterey Highway I have bought long runs of steel there, which is where my bed rack steel came from. You could try Allen Steel too.

Thanks for the feedback all, super good stuff! I'll work my way from south to north (since I'm in Morgan hill).

    Bay Area is pretty general?

Naylor steel in Hayward as mentioned above is ok, but I always thought a little pricey. Less inventory than Allan Steel

Allan Steel in Redwood City. If you dont mind the lack of customer service, they have EVERYTHING. Really fun place to walk around and dream up new projects. You gotta go here at least once in your life. Check first though, bankers hours!

Pleasanton Steel in Livermore....dont ask. Great customer service, less inventory than Allan Steel.

Just saw you were in MH. There is also Sims on Monterrey Hwy in south San Jose. My least favorite place, but it might work for you.

I haven't taken a measure yet, but rough guess, maybe 8-10 or so feet of 1.5 angle steel for the rails, and maybe 18-20 of 1.25-1.5" square tube, and maybe 10 or so feet of 1" square tube.

My thinking is to do three legs and bars across the bed w/ 1.5" and angle steel for the bedsides, 1"pieces to tie the cross bars together. Maybe 2 or three rows.

Super duper, I work in mountain view so I'm pretty mobile. I'll take random days off too to pull crap like this together. Stoked to get this rolling. Still figuring out a budget way to get my feet wet welding and cutting steel. Might see if a buddy I know can get me started with his welder and see if it's something I'll want to buy for the tool collection.

Just my opinion, but I very much dislike using angle iron. I wont say what I really think cuz many use it. But, whenever I need angle, I buy square tube and cut it down the middle with a plasma cutter. Nice rounded edges.

I was wondering if that wouldn't be better, but pretty sure I'm not going to have access to a plasma cutter :) I'll google too but... What is sucky about angle iron?

Allan steel is a crazy place to go to. The guy that works in the office there is from a different world lol

Bormann Steel is a great place also.

What thickness of tubing and angle are you looking at?
