The wife will be gone that weekend but me and the kido might make it out sounds fun.

^right on! I think Phil is gonna roll too, with his beastly 4runner. As it gets closer we'll iron out some details on meeting place, times etc.

Ya absolutely. There's camping at Middlecreek, which is basically right when you enter the NF. Additionally there's sites about 15 min into the NF at Penny Pines campground. Nicer spots, more coverage. Additionally I'm fairly certain you can do dispersed camping pretty much anywhere in the NF if you want. Check the links I posted in the OP or call the upper lake ranger station to confirm.

I was considering the same plan, but it's gonna be a bit chilly, and with our baby girl up there with us it might be pushing it...

Yeah, I'll give them a call and see what's up. We have a tent heater now so that will help... Warm up before bed, warm up when wake up :)

Was already planning on doing this, would be awesome to do it with fellow TWers, I'll see if we can make the date, though we were planning a camping trip with it.

Right on! So I was up there today, riding my dirtcycle. No snow to speak of, but the dirt's real nice. :) hopefully we get some cold and wet weather before the 6th. It'd make it a lot more fun! Plenty of good lookin Xmas trees too.

Would it make sense to get the permit by mail or are we purchasing them on site?

YES!! Do this. Thank you for bringing it up. I need to update the OP. The ranger station is open m-f 8-5. Since we are going on the weekend we'll need to get our permits prior! So either mail in or stop by a ranger station before then.
