Which GPS?

So what GPS has trails on it and what would be the best for offroading?

A GPS isn't gonna have trails already on it - atleast, not that I know of any.

YOu have to navigate the trails yourself and save the 'trip' (so to speak) or I think you can download information from someone else who already has the tracks saved on their GPS (assuming, its the same brand GPS).

The smaller GPS's (for joggers & walkers) might be more friendly in terms of trails..... but I personally would get a full blown GPS so you can use it in the truck.

I have a really really old Garmen that we used for trail tracking. Currently, we have a Garmen Nuvi 660. Haven't really used it for trail tracking. Do some research on how the GPS tracks a trip - whether it'll track the entire trip or if you have to set waypoints. ??

 

The Delorme PN-40 and 60 have map software that has some trails in it. You can download other people's tracks and add them to your gps.
For $30 per year, you can get all the maps you want. Water charts, satellite images too.
It's a better off-road gps, but works over road ok. It just doesn't route on the device, nor find things fast.
The delorme's are pricy but powerful. The software is not user friendly, but not impossibly so. It takes some getting used to. The battery life is not awesome, but extra batteries and or vehicle power adapter's are available.
I love my PN-60. It gets signal when my phone can't.

Frys carries it for $265 or you can go to Sport Chalet and they will price match so long as Frys has it in stock and will verify price over the phone...

 

Get any Garmin and you will not regret.
We have owned 4 of them, the first one I bought 12ys ago still works great.
Go to Garmin website, it is pretty user friendly to figure out what you want. lots to choose from.

How would the Garmin 500 compare to the Lowrance XOG?

 

locus free does a good job on my android based Xoom tablet. Been very pleased and the price is right.

 

Have you charted a few off-road trails via GPS coordinates on the Locus Free? Downloading it as we speak to test it out

 

dogbite, i loaded it and stored GPS coordinates just trying to figure out how to set directions and such using those points...this app might be bad ass!

 

Garmin GPS60csx. Get the topo software and the city nav software and you will be set

 

For the Garmin, you'll get all the street maps but for trails, you need to figure out and load the Topo maps you need/want. I use a Zumo 550 with topo maps and that works fine. Of course, not every logging road is going to be available but most established trails are.

The topo software comes on several CD's. Be sure to get the correct region you need.

 

Garmin Montana 650 Mount for my bike and Tacaoma and can be used handheld for hiking and its also water and shock proof and has a big screen. I have 20K topo maps and there are lots of free sites for trails you can upload. It also has a camera on it for snaping a quick picture and will geotag the image and remember where you took it. Around 500.
