I wouldnt even attempt sand with more than 20# warm tire pressure and
14# is going to be better. 2 WD can get it in the sand.

it might help to carry 4 15' X 1.5' rolls of carpet w/ like a 15' peice of 1/4 line tied off to the ends, a jack w a base and a shovel. Of course a 30" yanker is almost prerequiset.

Tim, Thats an item that most people dont think about, and should if off roading in a Prerunner. Personally, 1.5' is too narrow. I keep a peice big enough to cover the bottom of my bed. A blanket works also.

4wd in sand

all i gotta say is...get the 4wd and NEVER second guess. its worth it. iv been stuck in places which id never thought i would. all i have to do is click it into 4wd and i feel like a lotus on a hot track with sticky tires...traction all day...that is priceless. its fun messing around in 2wd until i get stuck. then just drop it into 4wd if all else fails. its great. good luck

I figure if I get stuck in sand, I can leave the truck in drive and set the cruise at 10MPH and get out to push. When its free all I gotta do is get inside before it hits something.

I like long strips at least twice as wide as your treads and as long as your truck plus a little bit. the reason why I like them thiner is that it encourages you to drive slower initially to stay on them . Nothing sucks worse than doing all that work then driving off the strips right off and getting stuck again.

heres how I always use them (assuming Im aired down correctly already)

1. Jack up the buried tires and fill the holes up with sand (or whatever) you might want to take a sec to knock the sand from between the treads as you do this.
tamp down the sand with the back of the shovel your knees feet or whatever. then tamp down the sand in front of your vehicle to form some sort of runway towards firmer ground. sprinkling some sea water or beer cooler water to firm up the sand afterwards works pretty well if you happen to be close to the shore or drink alot of beer

2. lay out the strips on the runways and remember to leave some for under tires. I like to leave some hanging out the back some as well. (if im going forward to escape) in case I need to back up some.

3. let down the tire onto the carpet strip. you can leave the excess sort of running up the back of the front tire as it should unfurl and lie flat as you move forward.

do this for the front and back tires.

4. now I tie the 3/8 line to the back of the carpet strips ( you can cut a small hole or "X" with a knife and reinforce it with good ol duct tape). Now tie the ropes off to the rear bumper or rear tow point. You might even want to put the rope to the front strips under the rear strips. this will keep it from getting hung up in the hubs or god forbid the drive shaft. (if you have ever had a sleeping bag tent or line wrapped up in your drive shaft U joints or axels you Know what a bitch a of a deal this can be.)

5. get in and take off the brake and shift into low gear. drive off normally try not to spin the tires back in.

Now the ropes will let you drag the strips off with you to higher ground with you and you wont have to walk a long ways back to get them or dig them back out

this trick works pretty good in mud as well. However in real muck the carpet trick doesnt work so well. so you might find yourself winching yourself out the old fashion way.

I learned this trick when I was driving my buggy on the beach when I lived in Galveston Texas about 20 or so years ago

PS the folded up carpet strips work pretty good as a foot for the Jack in a pinch

Well I am afraid to take a brand new truck off roading and getting it all scratched up etc. Call me crazy. This one has the tow pkg also and I plan on towing my BMW from TX to VA next week, hope I don't mess it up by doing that. Any I have already done a 3" lift done at the dealer and added 20" chrome wheels and a Kenwood 8120 in dash nav. I plan on adding the TRD intake and exhaust later and maybe the super charger next year. I want to do a few cosmetic things like the black headlight mod but I'm too squeemish to pull the headlight housings apart. I also want to tint the tail lights.

Yeah I wish you could just buy the headlights already backed out. I also want to add HIDs and upgrade the sound system. When I had the Kenwood installed the sound quailty went down hill big time, it really sounds worse thatn the stock system. Oh and I forgot to mention I have my 4 wheeler for off roading
