I use 4-lo around the house to back up grassy hills since I can let idle do it without juggling gas and clutch. Keeps it slow enough that the tires don't spin and tear up the grass while clutching, or if I need to get within a few inches of something.

Other than that, I use it mostly to get up STEEP hills, or hold my speed back without riding the brakes. It's not as useful to me now with the locker mod done since I can't transition from 4LO to 4HI without stopping. So using 4LO to get going and switching to 4HI is pointless. If I need more speed that 4LO 1st, and less than 4HI 1st I'll start in 4LO 3rd. But more often than not I'll just use 2wd locked and engage 4HI if I bog down when offroading.

actually you'll get less spin going up hills IF you use 2nd and modulate the throttle. Plus you will stall out your manuals much less. 4lo1 is deadly for going down steep hills with the brake on and maybe even the parking brake. if it really steep AND slippery (gravely) stay off the foot brake almost all of the time one time you might want to pump it is when you drop off into a hole. ABS works wonders on steep downhill gravely situations because you almost can never lock it up hard.
a locked tire cant steer and going down hill your rear loses much of its traction. if you lock the front you cant steer and the back can come around creating a roll over situation. THe bottom or back wall of a hole by definition has less of a downhill angle than the slope. this area of reduced grade give you opportunity to press down on the foot brake just a bit and slow the vehicle some what. YOu can also do this when the back tires drop into the same hole so you get two shots at it each time.

This depends entirely on the terrain.

Have you actually taken your 08 off road yet on gravel and tried using the ABS? Just asking since it kicks in so much that sometimes the truck won't STOP and it actually makes things worse. Nothing like sliding toward the edge of a drop off because the damn ABS won't stop the tires. Anyway, there's a reason why I have an ABS kill switch, and before that used the locker even when I didn't need it just because it shuts off the ABS crap.

What exactly are you talking about regarding "spin less up hills" anyway? I never said anything about wheel spin. I'm talking about 45 degree or greater washed out trails that twist back n forth over the face of the hill with large rocks strewn about. Something I prefer to not get up using more skinny pedal in 2wd or 4Hi. And I never mentioned what gear so I coulda been in 3rd for all you know. Chances are I probably was since 4LO, 1st isn't much good other than for snail's pace crawling, or getting someone unstuck.

lol Just checking.... I mean, since my ABS kicked on a few times pulling into the gravel parking lot at my old apartment (sometimes on the gravel, sometimes on the ice/dirt/snow/gravel in winter). When I first got the truck I had to learn to hold my foot differently as my "normal" foot/pedal position that works for the car caused the ABS to kick in at 5-10MPH and almost caused the truck to slide into trees or cars at the parking lot. Of course I've learned to adjust my foot so it puts less pressure on the brake pedal and engages the ABS less, but imagine my irritation at almost damaging my truck in the first few weeks of picking it up. I've even felt it engage slamming on the brakes when coasting down my driveway in the winter (all flat snow covered asphalt) when one of my youngins dispears near the truck. Noticing that I don't really have more steering control when the ABS is thumping away doesn't help inspire confidence about it in me either.

On a side note, I've never locked the tires up on asphalt braking hard with the ABS off, but in the same situations I've had the ABS kick in when I've left it on. Also seems like the truck has more braking power with the ABS off. As in, less pressure on the pedal stops the truck faster. So sometimes I just flip the switch when I'm coming up on an intersection and I'm not sure the idiot at the stop sign is gonna wait for me, or pull out in front at the last minute.

But I digress.... This isn't an ABS thread.

Sand AND gravel!?! NO WAY!!

Much less hang with people who get stuck in 2x4 tacos ON sand banks.

or pee on the side of the road

And Id never drive on rocks

Not ever pretty pink and purple ones
And Id never go through this place

I would never under any circustances trespass on the Nevada test site.

perish the thought.

Hope you guys had fun at the Mall today.

No. None of them are. The photos of my truck are on film, and my scanner is down. I took my Dodge on the Crown King trail (4th photo down) and beat it up good. However, I did it in my PreRunner without a problem.

you should use 4 lo on trails. take care of your truck and move slowly. in mud 4 hi is needed, its a fast pace sport. but on the trail stick to 4 lo so you dont wear out your clutch. when you follow someone you really need to watch your distance. i stay in 4 lo and in 1st gear. the gear is nice and low so you just creep along. make sure you watch your temp and take a break if it starts to get warm.

Timmer, That's not sand ...this is sand...Oh and I used 4LO to drive out of the little holes I make to load my quad easier, but now that the dunslops are gone 4HI will probably do just fine, haven't taken my truck out there this season yet.

and you are missing mud/snow

No, we weren't in my truck for this one.
