    Really?

Man, with all those cameras no photos or videos? Really??

I am sorry you had a tire that comitted suicide on you yesterday... Boy, that was a pretty fast change... Nothing like a dozen pit team people on your truck.

I hope there are some photos at least of the climb... wow!

The last time the Baja 1000 ran the length of the peninsula to La Paz was in 2006... and we were there! We helped with communications for Baja Pits at El Crucero, about 1/3 of the distance to La Paz... We took in some sites along with the race activity... here's my web page of that trip: http://vivabaja.com/1106 (Nov. 2006)

Bahia de los Angeles (Bay of the Angels)... on the east coast of Baja, a 9 hour drive from San Diego... like another world!

Yes, Bahia de los Angeles is L.A. Bay! See where it is on the Baja 1000 map (Checkpoint 5)?

U.S. officials are still accepting the previous 'birth certificate with drivers license' without hassle. If you applied for the passport already, then you have the receipt and can use that. Our son (who works for Ivan Stewart's son prepping Baja racers) came back with only his birth cert and photo ID (last month) with no problem.

So, all you really need to worry about is GETTING YOUR TRUCK READY!!! ;)

So what's the deal with this race? Start? Finish? Does everyone just camp on the side of the course or what?

Desert Racing/ Off Road Racing is a man and his machine contest against the elements... It is a race against the clock for fastest time to the finish. Every type of motodcycle, quad, four wheeled vehicle is involved and are grouped into many classes based on engine size, drivers age, vehicle type, etc.

Racers start one every 30 seconds with the motorcycle classes first, early in the morning... then there will be a 4 hour gap after the last quad before the first full size four wheeled vehicle begins... The fastest are the Trophy Trucks with 800 or more horsepower and the slowest are the Class 11s which are pure stock VW beetles.

Racers must stop at each checkpoint and they also now have GPS trackers to make sure they stay on the course or don't exceed the highway limit of 60 mph. Yes, off road racing in Baja uses the main highways in a few places as well as open public/ private dirt roads...

To watch the action, go to your choice of location the day before, or some time before the racers arrive, stay far anough from the road if there is a jump, for safety, and enjoy... The further away from Ensenada, the longer the racers will be going by, as they get spread out due to breaks and flats, etc. Of course the further away you are, the fewer you will see... as only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the starters make it to the finish in a race as long and as tough as the BAJA 1000.

I highly recommend you rent or Netflix 'Dust to Glory' the Baja 1000 movie filmed during the 2003 Baja 1000, which was a big loop race in northern Baja that stated and ended in Ensenada. It has all the various aspects of the race featured... Mario Andretti has a fun part in it, as well.

See my photos from the 2006 Baja 500, which had a dog co-rider on a motorcycle! http://vivabaja.com/606

It is over 1,000 miles long and they expect 300 entries this year... It will take the good part of the first day just to get them off the statring line! Possibly from 6:30 am to 1 pm ? (300 entries, 150 minutes plus the 4 hour gap between the bikes/ quads and the Trophy Trucks...

It is quite a event in Ensenada! The outback of Baja has mini-cities pop up along the race course at check points, pit team locations and good viewing spots... The racers have a limited number of hours from their statring time to be still in the running. Checkpoints close at certain times, as well. Miss a checkpoint and you are out of luck!

The race is listed as Nov. 17-20... That means the 17th is registration and tech inspection/ contingency day... a really big day in Ensenada where whole streets are closed and $100,000 pick ups, and buggies line up to get checked in and add decals from manufactorers who want to advertise their products on a winning racer. The race starts on the 18th and runs well into the second day (19th). Trophy presentation in La Paz is on the 20th after the last racers finish that morning.

The fastest racers average about 50-60 mph (includes all stops/ breaks, etc.) So, the 1050 mile course will require 18-21 hours for them to finish... while the slower classes or fast cars with lots of problems will average 25 mph or take them 42 hours from when they left Ensenada to finish and still be in the race!

If the fastest bike happens to be the first one off at 6:30 am Thu, then he would get to La Paz at 12:30 am Fri (if his avg. speed was 60 mph). If the slowest finisher averaged 25 mph, and left Ensenada at 1 pm Thu, then he/ she would arrive in La Paz at 7 am Saturday!

The race goes to La Paz (or Cabo) only every so often... the cost is much higher and they finish 1,000 miles south of most of their homes! The other years, it is a 600-800 mile loop race usually starting and ending in Ensenada... It is nice to finish where you started!

The Baja 500 is in June and the San Felipe 250 (one year it was the 'Baja 250' when the race was suddenly moved due to a land crossing dispute) is in March... that is the three races run by SCORE.

Other organizations also run races in Baja, such as CODE... usually they run races between Mexicali and San Felipe.

Again the movie 'Dust to Glory' is excellent at seeing this sport and how in the many ways it has affected us and the people of Baja, in a great way.

Just heard our son is being picked to pit for a Trophy Truck he does the prep work on... so we may be headed for San Felipe or perhaps Baja Sur...???
