    I vote buy one...

Here is an option that I found today on CL... its not mine...but if i had the money, it would be.

    http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/2114262838.html

I just saw you arent in the country but if you have someone here that could look at it for you then its a possibility. You could probably get it and tow it home i would say for less than 15k.

1984 toyota, i know its not a toyota motor but at least its not a ford:rolleyes:

    best of luck

I like how everyone that has a built up rig says to buy one already built.

I'd put $13k into the Taco and buy a p.o.s. $2k commuter car to get to work.

keep the tacoma, buy a new rig and build it. you could buy a fully capable crawler with one tons for ~5k. watch craigslist and you'll find someone stressing to get some extra cash.

Building it would be the most fun, but shit if you can buy one for cheaper why not? I wish i could get all the money i put into my truck back and buy a tail rig instead... Uncle sam makes me move to damn much!

I'd personally NEVER buy a rig that's already built.

I've been around the offroading scene for many years and I've seen some scary ass shit thrown together, hacked up, not maintained, abused. I've also seen many people buy built rigs and have nothing but headaches trying to keep them going.... stuff always falling apart and you don't know what parts they used and replacing stuff is nearly impossible - so you usually end up RE-building everything
    all over again anyway.

You're much better off buying a stock rig and building that to exactly how you want it and you know exactly what's done and what parts are used, you also know that YOU put it together and it was done right.

I'm with Jan. I'm where I am with mine because I never thought I'd be adding the stuff I had. I'm also a very cautious offroader because of my setup, whereas a trailered/used/cheap rig would let me breathe better. I'm still hoping to add a dirtbike to my stable by the end of year, which I won't have to worry about.

I voted buy, but I meant buy an old stocker and build it up smartly. Sometimes you can find already made but I think it would be few and far between. Around my parts a 4x4 Toyota would be hard to find that isn't falling apart so I wouldn't turn down the thought of Jeep.

I voted build it, there's nothing quite like the satisfaction you get from doing it yourself. Then if something breaks, you know more about your truck and you're better prepared to repair it.

although i like the idea of doing it myself, but after looking at some of the rigs for sale on ebay/various off road sites/ http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36
I think i'm gonna go with buying it this time, and it might suck , and i might have to fab some stuff that i can't figure out what the previous owner used, but i can start out with what would on my own take me years to achieve and build on that , plus i'll be able to get a rig, trailer, and new shoes for the taco and keep it under budget

I voted build.. But now that i think about it, buy another one. It makes more sense. Have the taco, lift it and put some big tires on it. And then spend the rest on a sick jeep. So basically after the jeep is dead you'll still have a sick tacoma.

Buy it ~ You can buy a used trail rig for Pennies on the dollar...
The slow economy has guys selling Trail Rigs for peanuts. Their is still plenty of work to do to customizze them and make them your own. Save $$$ by getting the axles suspension and tube work taken care of on some one elses $$$...

For example: here is a nice well built Sammy buggy Chev Vortec 4.3L Th350 / Dana 300 / on TOyota Solid axles / with 36" Irocks / Tube cage + 4-link suspension front and rear + custom high end parts throught. This is a new build and the owner lost interest and bought a boat. I think he is now down to $7k.

That does look like a good deal for a 2001 and under $10k
But you also have to consider that it is stock steering / stock(ish) axles / stock t-case / and 35's ~ it would make a good DOT legal dual sport rig. Just all depends on the type of wheeling you want to do?

I'd pick again if you ever plan on rolling ~ Full body Jeeps are way to expensive to roll. ~ I shot this pic he was safe but it hurt his pride. I can only imagine what it cost...
