I vote sliders first. I have the Stubbs, they are good quality and fairly inexpensive.

Yup. Sliders first. I have Stubbs HD-SKO. I'm very happy with them, they have saved my truck many times now.

ATO front skid (need more but icon's might fail if I hang anything else from my truck) All-Pro front bumper thanks to a good deal here and a pesky encounter with a rock or 20, total chaos uppers.
Ill chime in, sliders have saved me quite a bit of body damage out in Borego, took a high line (bad idea) and slid until a large bolder effectively stopped the truck. One can of paint later it looked good as new! Net cost of my mistake, $5.99. Now about ifs skids, I have the ATO's and they are beefy, my 5100's are holding their own but next mod will be kings with the correct spring to compensate for the additional weight.

A Tacoma often will hit the frame before it touches the sliders. But the bottom of the doors will dent easy.

After testing the stock steel skid plates and TRD aluminum skid plate to their breaking point. I recently purchased the All Pro IFS skid plate for $150.

Next purchase will be sliders. But a good quality skid plate protecting the engine and trans are more important IMO. I would rather get a dent in the bottom of my door on a trail, than a hole poked into my engine oil pan while on a trail.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
You really should be putting your tires over the big obstacles and not your diff so I say sliders first.
