Off road with a FWC camper?

The very fact that this subforum exists somewhat answers the question, but let me ask it anyway. I was all set to buy a 3/4 ton when I discovered that was going to pose a parking problem at work (1/2 ton is the same size, so same issue). So now I am kicking around the idea of a Tacoma. Some of the time I would likely carry the Four Wheel Camper campers.

Good off road vehicle? I would be doing moderate off roading, more than forest roads, but no rock climbing.

How about off road with the camper on board?

Any idea what kind of mpg I can expect with the camper?

I'm impressed they kept the weight so low.

You might end up adding an "add a leaf" to your rear leaf pack to help with the load.

 

Like Bjmoose said, get an AAL to help suport the weight of the TSB leaf pack (covered under warranty).

I can tell you that the tacoma will be much better offroad than the full size you were looking at, because of the size and weight.

I can't guess at the mpgs. When I flat towed a Jeep Wrangler from SD to Flagstaff, AZ I averaged between 10-12. And I have 33" tires. I get 20mpg on the freeway and that is with about 600lbs in the back with my Bestop on.

 

have you looked on www.expeditionportal.com there would be more people with alot more experience than us.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I am somewhat heartened that SB gets 20 mpg with 600 lbs in the bed. I would probably be doubling that and would be pushing more air, though not hugely more as the FWC is a pop-top camper. Hopefully I can do better than the guy on another thread who was towing 6000 lbs and got 8 mpg!

 

youll be fine just throw in an add a leaf and take it easy on off camber stuff.
