im looking in to buying a new tacoma and im wondering what the big difference is between the TRD sport with the hood scoop and with out the hood scoop. im mainly going to be offroading and taking my bikes out and what not and driving to and from work, which one is best for me?

what is the difference between lsd and locking?
and are there any benefits for having a locking rear end?

There is far more to an Off Road TRD than a rear locker... There is Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), powered by a hydraulic brake booster (only found in the Off Road TRD).

Since you said 'New' Tacoma... there is a correction to an earlier reply... The Sport and the Off Road share the same LSD now (TRAC and AUTO LSD). Before 2009, the Sport had a mechanical limited slip differential.

2009+ The Sport and Off Road both have electronic sensing, brake activated limited slip. The Off Road has the advantage in a much stronger limited slip because of the hydraulic booster over the Sport's vacuum booster.

Active Traction Control is one big step ahead of limited slip in that instead of slowing a non-traction tire from spinning loose (so the traction tire receives more power), it actually MATCHES tire rotation across the axle (as a locker does), but frees up automatically to allow steering when the obstacle is passed.:p

The rear locker is still available for use with or without the A-TRAC on.

What you have with the OFF ROAD TRD 4WD TACOMA is a machine that goes far and away beyond any other showroom stock truck without the need to sink hundreds or thousands more for after market traction assist products (like a front locker)... But, you can if you want... and nothing wrong with that, it's your dollar!

Enjoy whatever you want a Sport truck that has looks of a street machine with a hood scoop and color matched trim. Or, an Off Road truck that has the climbing ability of a mountain goat and better over-hood visibility because there is no fake hood scoop in the way.:D

Click on my link below to read about the 9 drive modes the Off Road TRDs have you can choose for any driving condition or desire...

Good luck and happy four wheeling!

Donald: After searching this subject I've finally found a decent answer. Posting the Toyota brochure info as others have done isn't that helpful. Your take on the question was excellent! Since off road time will be rare for me I considered the "sport " sufficient although I would not be happy about the fake scoop. I mostly I need it to get off my icy snowy hill. After your explaination I'm leaning towards the o.r.

    Thanks

I think what it is Christian is that some folks want to hear YOUR feelings and thoughts on how it works for you... Anyone can read the sticker... but the sticker doesn't tell you what A-TRAC is or that the hood scoop is for looks only.

It is good to have both the Toyota words and us Tacoma drivers' findings I think.
