Check under your driver's side sun visor and it should have detailed steps for shifting from 2H to 4H to 4L. Sometimes you have to just repeat your steps and fiddle with it to make it work. Hope that helps.

Here is the card... for my 2010, but I used to have a 2001 and it is the same info I believe... Put it in N Neutral (not P Park) to go in and out of L4.

Double hold up... they had (and still do) an ADD (Automatic Disconnecting Differential) and not auto locking hubs.

The idea is the same (no going out and manually locking hubs to only wear front drive parts when you are four wheeling)... But, auto. locking hubs required you to drive in reverse to unlock the hubs... so that is hardly 'shift-on-the-fly'. Simple explanation: An ADD disconnects one side of the diff, and that frees up all the diff parts (because it is an open differential). It activates at the same time you go into 4WD... via a vacuum line.

No worries amigo... I originally called them Auto Hubs before I learned the difference... My dad had auto. hubs on his '65 Jeep, and I remember him saying that they unlocked after going in reverse for so many feet.
