If so, what spares did you take? How did you do? Did anything break?

I'm thinking tie rod ends, u-joints, and all the regulars. I want to run the 14th annual Rubicon scramble, but not sure I should without a spare half shaft and a spare third.

Not yet, but there's some tentative plans for a run around this time next year. Stay tuned?

I think there are spots you won't physically fit on the trail. Either because you're too wide or too long.

Wyatt has basically said 2gens will need end to end armor and spare parts because there WILL be mechanical failures.

    Not really surprising.

I know rigs wider than me can fit. And long, yeah I might drag occasionally, and might have a hard time turning occasionally.

I guess I'm more worried about breaking shit and not having the parts I need to get off the trail. I don't want to be that guy. I'm alright with having to pull cable or take a strap.

This is very true. I know a lot of jeeps going locally. :D

I'm just wondering of what sort. I've done a few rock gardens and such with the 35s and haven't broke anything but they weren't very long. I suppose I need to get some new gears and then find an extra third and half shaft. That would alleviate most of my worries.

I have not been through myself but I think excessive use of pride breaks more parts than anything. Sounds like your cool with the cable and strap, not quite as fun but will probably save you having to wrench on the trail.

Yeah, I definitely agree, and I'd much rather take a strap than break shit.

Also, if I were to find a stock third, had 4.56s, blew my rear, swapped thirds, it would be "okay" to run on the trail right? I'd rather have a spare third set up with 4.56s but that's a big cost.

Driveshaft, CV axle or two, spare third member, two spare tires, spare tie rods, spare belts and hoses would be my list. All needed tools, fluids, and gaskets/seals/etc. goes without saying.

I would think youd want spare cv's, a third, possible rear drive shaft. And if you dont get new tires and front locker and LOW gears you will have a much more frustrating trip. I do those trails in my 85 runner and even with 5.29's and marlin crawler duals I wish I could go slower off some of the ledges.

...not really. It'll definitely HELP you break shit faster, but some stuff is just hard. I've been present for plenty of carnage when the driver was taking it nice and easy.

Vehicles are designed to work on roads. When you're off them, it's hard on them.

Alright. Wont' be running it this year. :( Thanks guys. Pretty much what I figured. Probably stick to deer valley, slick rock, barney riley, and the local trails near Reno.

Also, I've gone through the blown rear end thread on ttora a couple times in the past. Can't seem to remember, has anyone blown a rear with aftermarket gears?

You can go threw the rubicon with a stock truck. No problem. There are ways around all the heavy spots. Easy.

Not sure about the other trail. Never done it

You can blow just about any rear end in the right situation. Aftermarket gears are much less prone than the stock toyota stuff.

Certainly, I do understand that. :) Doesn't seem to be much of an issue with aftermarket gears though as I understand it. Or am I mistaken?

My point being simply if you take a moderate approach to gettign through with copius use of assistance you will be far less likely to break anything than if you say "that doesn't look so hard I think I can make it"

And as was pointed out, there are easier ways around obstacles you think might possibly leave you broken.

Of course none of that is more fun than making it through unassisted but easier trails and assistance are more fun than laying in the dirt wrenching on your truck (after your broke) Makes for good stories later though.

Sorry to hear you won't be running this year. I'm still interested in hearing how it goes when you do.
